The Common Room / Re: William Buckley convict sent to Australia
« on: Wednesday 09 October 24 11:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi Elaine, just seen your post on Facebook regarding William Buckley the convict. He was an ancestor of mine, this as been confirmed not only by a researcher but the author who wrote about William and a member of my family as all the paperwork. William was illegitimate and brought the up by his grandparents, he was sent to van diemens land after stealing a bolt of cloth . My maiden name was Buckley and my late dad and all his side lived in Cheshire. Every 1st daughter in my family were call Elizabeth hence my name.

Cheshire / Re: Nether Alderley and Broken Cross

Hi Sarah, thanks for your reply. The only Broken Cross my relatives know of is the area near Macclesfield, it is still known as that on "Rightmove". I have old ordinance survey maps going back to the 1800s, and that's the only Broken Cross that is mentioned. Hope one day your mystery is solved.

Liz 😊

Broken Cross is about a mile and half from Macclesfield Station. Not far from the A537, there is also Birtles Road there, it is possible that's where the smiths you mention was. My dad was born in Mobberley, my ancestors lived Nether Alderley, Siddington, Prestbury. My cousin lives in Knutsford.

The Common Room / Re: Is Sally another name for Sarah?
« on: Sunday 23 June 19 14:52 BST (UK)  »
My Great Aunt was always called Sally but on her birth and baptism certificates it was Sarah. Always baffles me why names were changed, my mum was Marie Blanche, known as Blanche, dad was John known as Jack. Why not give them these names in the 1st place.😊
