Thanks for your reply, Ray. And thanks for taking the time to look.

I imagine if I was on the spot and could examine local archives, I might be able to find something more on James' death. Unfortunately that's not possible. I appreciate your insight on possible circumstances! Maybe will find more info some day.

I realize this is an older thread, but I am interested in James Ellis too. I have found a burial on FamilySearch for a James Elleis - 24 Dec 1646 in Wybunbury.

The original image is a bit blurry but it seems to say: ...James Elleis, schoolmr, slaine by a souldier.  :o

I would appreciate if someone could check my reading of it!

If this was him (or even if it wasn't) why would he have been 'slaine'? Wasn't the first Civil War pretty much over by then?

Thanks in advance, anyone who has time to look!

The Common Room / Re: Ancestry "tree search" is a joke! any alternatives?
« on: Thursday 11 November 21 02:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Gary,

I use the Rootsmagic program to complement my Ancestry trees. You can upload your Ancestry tree to Rootsmagic and then take advantage of their searching, sorting and listmaking capabilities.

Using your example, if I wanted to find families that lived on a certain street, I would just use the Rootsmagic 'Search Everywhere' feature to look for anywhere that street name appeared in my tree. You can also print a list of everyone that lived in a certain place.

Using the Rootsmagic 'Places' feature, you can go through a gazetteer of all place names in your tree and find ones that are misspelled or wrongly entered. Then pop back to your Ancestry tree in another tab and locate the person whose info you want to make changes to.

It's not as easy as just using one program for everything, but if you like to work in Ancestry, Rootsmagic can help a lot.

There is a free version of Rootsmagic, I believe, but I pay for the full version which is a one-time expense of about $40 US.

Hope this helps!

Yes, that is her husband. I can send the other photos privately if you like.

Yes that is correct.

My scans of the photos are from the Vaughan Archives. In the Cameron fonds at the archives there is a photo of her son, John Reid Heggie, as well. Also ones of the couple's younger children, Jessie Cameron and Andrew.

Never mind - I just realized I could post my copy and see if it matches. Much easier.

Is this the Mrs. Heggie you have?

If so, her husband was John Heggie, born Glasgow Gorbals 1847. He moved to Canada and died in Toronto in 1933. He and his wife were deaf and dumb.

Would you be able to post those pictures?

They sound like they might be on my tree after all. I may recognize if I could see them.

Do you know what area or city in Ontario the photos are from?

What are the names of the other people shown in the other photos in the album?

That might give a clue for someone with those names in their tree.

I have Heggies and Camerons in mine but it doesn't sound (from what you have posted so far) as if it would be my family.
