Hello!

Is anyone still alive and digging into the Frain family?

Mary8, I tried to send you a message, but it did not send.

My great grandfather was Dominick FRAIN. I’ll be glad to share whatever you need to establish my bona fides.

I think they may have left for work in England about 1880, as I don’t find any mention of them after the baptism of their son Martin in December of 1879.

Hopefully, this agrees with the information you have.

I’m so hoping to hear from you.

Thanks. Stay safe!

Normal, there’s a Winifred Frain somewhere in my tree. I’m not sure of the link, but I think she was a cousin of my grandfather, or the daughter of one of his namesakes.

Do you have any more Frain information to share?

I’ll hope to.

Thanks. Stay safe!

My great grandfather was one of several Dominick Frains I’ve found. MY DF was born about 1850 and I believe his father was John. I THINK I’ve read that he was from Gorteen. He married Mary Roper at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary in February 1877. My grandfather, Thomas Joseph Frain, was born in November and christened at Our Lady in December. He left for the U.S. in 1896.

The last record I find for them is the birth of my great uncle, Martin, in 1879. I don’t know if they died or left the country or what. Being Irish and Catholic, two children seems rather few.

Has anyone got a Dominick in their tree from Sligo who was born about 1850? I’m sure he was a namesake uncle to some of the other Dominick Frains I’ve seen.

If this is appropriate to post here, my GEDMatch is T491680. I’ve heard from a couple of people who say they’ve found a match, but it’s 7.4 generations back. That gets us back to the late eighteenth century, and I can't yet go back that far.

If anyone can help with information or leads, please let me know. I’ll share what I can with you if you ask.

Thanks. Have a great day! Stay safe.

Dan

I don't want to hijack your thread. If this should be in a new post, please accept my apologies and move it. I'm one of the clumsy Americans behind whose backs I'm sure you laugh. I mean no offense and hope none is taken.

I was told most of my life that my grandfather, Thomas Joseph Frain, was born in Connecticut in 1877. I have learned (or so I'm led to believe) that he was actually born in Mayo, baptized in Tobercurrie, Sligo, and emigrated to the U.S. in 1896. If what I've heard is correct, his parents were Dominick and Mary Roper Frain. I'm only saying what I was told. I'm not sure of any of it.

He moved to Minnesota and raised his family there. The anti-Irish sentiments of the day may have led him to say he was born in the U.S. In 1937, times were hard in Minnesota and they moved to Corpus Christi, TX, where he lived out the rest of his days, and where I was born & raised.

I can see the need to tell such a tale if people won't hire Irish fresh off the boat.

We were in Ireland about a year ago, and I learned how very little I knew of my family's history. I met a very kind man at a family history center and was asked questions to which I didn't know any answers.

A lady at the tourist office in Cong was also helpful, such as she could be. Frain is not a common name in south Mayo, more in the east part of the country and in Roscommon. I needed a map to learn that it really wasn't far away.

If anyone can fill in any of the large blank spots, I'll be very grateful.  If you're a kindly amateur, I'll have my son look you up and buy you a pint when he's in Ireland next month.

Well, I'll ask him to do. He's his own man, young and hardheaded, much like his father, and his. I can't promise that he'll get to Mayo; he'll be two nights in Dublin, two in NI, and a few more on the road. Thankfully, the fires should be out by the time he gets to NI.

I'm thinking I'd like to revisit Ireland, probably next April. Yes, I know the significance. One of my uncles was named Robert Emmet Frain.

I'll definitely visit Mayo. I want to top Croagh Patrick. I tried and failed last time. I'd like to visit the chapel and go to Mass. If you'd like to walk with me, please keep in touch.

Thanks for letting me ramble. Have a great day today and a better day tomorrow.

God bless.

Hi,

I am a direct relative to the Frain family of Putford. I have lots of info if anyone needs help. Mary Bessie Frain was my great Grandmothers sister.

Kind regards

Kath

Kath, how far back do your Frains go, and where? I believe my grandfather Thomas Joseph Frain was born in Mayo in 1877.

Please share whatever you can. Thanks!

Do you know the names of his children and what became of them? My grandfather, Thomas Joseph Frain, MAY have been one of Dominick's sons. He was born, I believe, in 1877, and christened in Tobercurry. He was in the U.S. by 1896 and joined the army in time to fight in the Spanish American War. Fortunately, the war ended before he made it to the Philippines. He served long enough to get a veteran's funeral and is buried at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas.

As unpopular as the Irish were then, he claimed all his life to have been born in America. I spent a lot of time and effort looking for him in Connecticut, only to find it was not the same Thomas Joseph Frain. Crap.

I've heard since that his father was Dominick and his mother was Mary Roper. I heard he had brothers named Martin and Dominick, and likely he also had sisters. They're all dead by now, so I have no way to know for sure. Is there a chance that your Dominick might be my GGrandfather?

The link for Mayo Memorial PeacePark org sends one to a site focused on HGH and appears they are selling growth hormones. (New link updated)

If there's a better link, please let us know.

Thanx
