Hertfordshire Lookup Requests / Re: George Watson - born 1853 in Royston

Thanks guys. Do you think this Harriett Scarr could be the same one mentioned in the 1861 census as the daughter of Jas and Elizabeth Scar in Great Shelford? The dates don't completely match (one is born in abt 1845 and the other is born around 1850) but I know that census ages are notoriously bad. Though a 5 year gap does seem unusually big.

Thank you Rosie99, that's really helpful! And definitely a good possibility. Is there any record of a marriage between a Harriet Scarr and a George Watson?

Hertfordshire Lookup Requests / George Watson - born 1853 in Royston

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for information on George Watson, born in Royston, Herts in abt 1853. I've found various references to him in the census records. I believe he was the son of Charles Watson (1813-BEF 1861) and Ann Childs (1815-1876). He married a woman called Harriet (1849-?) from Shelford, Cambs and had children called Edward Watson, Henry Robert Watson, Charles G Watson, Bernard Albert Watson and Ethel Maud Watson.

I haven't been able to track down a birth, marriage or death record for George Watson so I'm hoping someone else might have more luck. Because of the lack of marriage record I don't know anything about his wife Harriet either so I'd be grateful for any info found on her too.

Thanks

That's a shame. But thanks for looking that up for me :)

Hi Nadine,

Yeah I've had a look at the Rushden research website and it's given me loads of great info on the children John Sykes and his wife had during their time in Higham Ferrers. But before they started baptising children there, there is no record of either of them in the area (or any other Sykes' for that matter, apart from one Philip Sykes a few decades earlier who I don't think is related). So it seems they were born elsewhere. Since I believe John married his wife Fanny (nee Fisher) in 1773 in Bromham in Bedfordshire, I'd be interested to see whether there is a Bedfordshire connection with John Sykes too.

Hopefully John Sykes' will might have some insight into this! :)

Hello,

I'm looking for the will of John Sykes, married to Frances/Fanny Sykes, who died in Higham Ferrers in 1796. Does anyone on here have access to it?

There is no record of John Sykes being baptised in Higham Ferrers so he must have been born elsewhere. I'm hoping his will could help me determine whether this John Sykes is the same John Sykes baptised in Biddenham (Bedfordshire) on 23 Jul 1744.

The Biddenham John Sykes had a number of brothers and sisters (Abraham, Isaac, Alice, Mary, Anna Maria, Sarah and possibly Elizabeth)

If someone could look up the will of Higham Ferrers John Sykes and see if there is any reference to siblings with those names, or any mention of the Biddenham/Ravensden/Stagsden/Bedford area, I would be very grateful!

Bedfordshire Lookup Requests / Re: Phillip Sykes - Nether Dean early 1700s?

Thanks for looking that up John.

Not sure who Anna Maria is. Perhaps that's another name for Elizabeth? Though it seems like quite an unusual name, especially in comparison with the names of the rest of the family.

My next step to confirm whether John Sykes and Fanny Fisher were the ones living in Higham Ferrers might be to look for the will of the HF John. If I'm lucky he might mention the same brothers and sisters that Thomas Sykes mentions in his will.

Hopefully someone on the Northamptonshire RootsChat forum will have access to the county will records.

The names Thomas and Mary fits well with the naming traditions of the Sykes' I'm looking for. John Sykes in Higham Ferrers had a son called Thomas, who had a son called Thomas, who had a son called John Thomas. John Sykes of HF also seems to have given his children names which match up with those of his potential brothers and sisters (including Abraham, Sarah, Mary and Elizabeth). I've noticed families often repeat the same names over and over again so that is a good sign. Is there a way to get a look at the will of Thomas Sykes to see if he mentions a John Sykes in Higham Ferrers? I'm not sure of the procedure for looking at these records.

Also, how is it that Philip and Susan/nah from Ravensden are linked to Thomas and Mary?

Thanks,
