Essex / Location of East Ham Register Office in 1936
« on: Tuesday 23 July 24 18:08 BST (UK)  »
My dad was married in East Ham Register Office in 1936, and I'm trying to locate its exact location on a map.

A 1937 newspaper article mentions it is "opposite the station"  and a 1954 newspaper article mentions it being on the High Street.  I've looked at some old OS maps but I don't see the Register Office marked anywhere on the High Street or near East Ham Station.

I did wonder if it simply became Newham Register Office, but judging by the OS maps Newham Register Office was previously the library.

Although I see that East Ham Town Hall was opposite a police station, so maybe that was the "station" the newspaper article referred to.

Can anyone pinpoint where it was for me?

thanks
Mark

Hi Venner

Many thanks for taking the time to do that.  That's a wonderful picture.

I love the caption too.

Thanks for the great leads on Denise Mavity.  I love the press clippings from www.fultonhistory.com.

Are there any obituaries for Arthur Mavity or Denise Mavity from Norwalk?

thanks

I am looking for any information about Arthur Dennis Mavity and his wife Helen Clara Mavity (formerly Welsh).

Arthur was born 17 Jul 1882 in Woolwich, Kent, England and Helen was born about 1894 in Croydon, Surrey, England.

Arthur was an actor and appeared in several British silent movies in 1914.  He and Clara emigrated to the U.S.A. in 1915.  Initially they lived in New York City, but there is a 1942 U.S. Draft Registration Card that shows Arthur was living at 205 Liberty Sq., East Norwalk, CT

I believe they also had two children, but I've no idea what their names were.

Thanks
Mark

Canada Lookup Requests Completed / Re: Looking for Leslie Brivio

Hi

I'm distantly related to Ivy Lampkin and came across this post.  Are you sure he was Leslie and not Raymond? The GRO indexes have the following entries so it looks like Leslie died as an infant:

Births Mar 1915
Brivio    Raymond B    Lampkin    Elham    2a   2146

Births Sep 1916
Brivio    Leslie L    Lampkin    Lewisham    1d   2023

Deaths Mar 1917
BRIVIO    Leslie L    0    Elham    2a   1894

Regards
Mark

My favourite first name in my family tree is Newyear.  Guess when he was born?   ;)

As for the irritation factor the only thing that got me was the way they pulled this mystery photo out right at the end with no explanation of where it came from (probably some relation somewhere - but would it have killed them to say where?)

The photo of Joseph Hodgkins towards the end of the programme came from me, as did a few a few of the photos at the beginning of the programme.

Henry was my great-grandfather and his son Allan started the family history research in the 1980s.  Allan had his own gypsy connections.  He played guitar professionally with Django Reinhardt.  I don't think he ever realised the Hodgkins family were gypsies or that his father went to reform school.

There is a little bit about Allan on the web too at http://www.paulvernonchester.com/AllanHodgkiss.htm

The real mystery on Tracey's side of the family is why her grandfather Percy changed the family surname from Davis to Dodge in 1927-1928!

It is Tanworth and I have wondered for years what "Dirkle Worker" in the 1871 was meant to be.  I've always suspected he was pulling the enumerator's leg.
