Dorset / Re: Richard Moore - Portland quarry man missing after 1861
« on: Friday 21 November 25 00:15 GMT (UK)  »
That's my relative.  He seems to have disappeared entirely and there is no death record.  It would seem extreme to up and leave the whole family but you may well be right as there does not seem to be any record of him in the UK from 1870 onwards.

This would be worth exploring...
In 1877 James Moore was summoned for assault at the Alexandra Inn Wakeham. His brother Richard gave evidence. It was stated by Superintendant Batty that James Moore had recently returned from America but was a Portlander by birth.
As far as I can tell, these siblings would be Richard Snr and Ann Stones sons.
James Moore had married in 1865 and had 5 children before 1874.

It's maybe not as extreme as you might expect for Portlanders to seek work abroad leaving family behind.  There are a number of memorials in St. Georges Churchyard mentioning Portlanders that have died abroad.

In case it's useful, the 1939 Register for Waterloo Cottage, North Marine Rd, Flamborough....

Charles Ward b.14 Jul 1877 Ships Steward (temporarily unemployed)
Jessie J Ward b.14 Oct 1878 Udd
Joseph T Varey b.06 Nov 1829 At School

Burials Flamborough
Charles William Ward d.09 Jan 1952 bur.11 Jan 1952
Jessie Johnston Ward d.02 Jun 1944 bur.05 Jun 1944
Residence at time of death for both - "Thornhill", North Marine Rd, Flamborough.

I cant see "Thornhill" listed in 1939 and from later maps it's on the south side of the road almost opposite Waterloo Cottage so they do appear to be different buildings. I think we can say that Waterloo Cottage was likely not occupied by the Wards post 1943.

The late professor Hoar turned up Belvoir Street, but where he found this, we haven’t been able to find out. His notes were handed over to a University, but they found nothing on Green amongst them.

Maurice

Have you access to these notes and what do they actually say?  Could it simply be a note documenting that 39 Belvoir St was a sailors residence in c.1921?  It certainly doesn't look like a Home for Sailors in the more traditional sense.

... If John William Forton died in 1921 but no form was returned for 2 years, it would explain his name being there until Spring 1923.  Meanwhile, Selina Forton could have taken a lodger whose name never appeared at that address...

It may or may not be relevant, but there is a bit more going on with this couple. Reportedly he went "missing on or after 10 June 1921" and Selina was granted probate in 1925 that was later revoked in 1926.  It appears that for some reason he had deserted Selina.

In October 1926 he published an announcement in the Hull Mail that "after the 5th October 1926, I will not be answerable or responsible for any debts or liabilities entered into by my wife Selina Forton of 41 Newland Road Hull".  He died on 6 February 1940 at Whitstable.

It would appear that George m Greens pension application was filed 18 Oct 1921.  Whether the address provided at the time was Belvoir St remains to be seen.

They were at 2 East Street according to this report. https://www.findmypast.co.uk/image-share/f6b819b4-3b1c-4cb0-8042-cad7ce43f6bc

Are you sure he was William Henry and not William James as reported?

In my experience FPIA in green ink is a name amendment (for reason other than marriage) and I believe LND is the district code for London where the change was made/originated from  The original district codes for some London boroughs would no longer be applicable following the establishment of Greater London in the 60's. There is a similar example further down the same page as your subject.
