Durham Lookup Requests / Re: Routledge Terrace, Ryhope

I’m left wondering where the area called Cauld Knuckle was. I have found online a  picture of Cauld Knuckle school but not where that was. Maybe all the people who were familiar with the use of the name for an area of Ryhope have died.

I think spelk was referring to Cauld Knuckles at Ryhope  :-\

There is a post here about the school https://flamingnora.blogspot.com/2019/07/a-walk-on-ryhopes-wild-side.html

Following up on that I'd suggest it might have been this school here https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=17.3&lat=54.87397&lon=-1.37015&layers=168&right=ESRIWorld

On the r-h map you can see the houses in the modern photo and the track between the houses leading to the school.

I agree....  See https://www.findmypast.co.uk/image-share/4334fa69-5858-4295-8f69-fbab53f29edb

I think it was renamed Hollycarr Terrace in the 1890's.  In 1902 George Cowey lost his dog and gave his address for it's return as 7 Hollycarr Terrace.  In 1891 the family was enumerated at 7 Routledge Terrace.  On the 1895 OS map it appears to be a 25 household terrace matching the earlier find

...  Proving either was  in the London area in 1965 could be tricky as both married in Wales but after 1965 ...

Pauline could have been in North Wales.  Butlins/Pontins for example...

The Common Room / Re: Ann Stephens (Actress)

There are a number of shipping manifest entries for her.

She left England from Liverpool on the 'Parthia' on 11 April 1959 heading for New York. Her intention was to remain in the US. She was single, b. 21 May 1931 and gave her UK address as 8 Chepstow Mansions, Bayswater, London. Her occupation is given as Air Hostess. She potentially shows on a crew list for PanAm Airlines in the mid 1950s. One crew list in 1958 shows her as Ann G Stephens, with British nationality.

Monica

That 1958 record is her travelling from Leghorn Italy to New York 1st Class on the SS President Monroe.  Passport 804897 departed 29th May 1958 arrived 9 Jun 1958.  Address 633 15th St, N. W. Wash, DC.

It's the same passport number on the Parthia dep. Liverpool 11 Apr 1959 arr New York 20 Apr 1959 (Again first class).  The Address though difficult to read appears to be App.2633 15th St, N.W. Washington 9.D.C.

2633 looks more likely residential on google streetview.

...I haven't seen Ann Stephens hereself in any of these electoral registers...
Chepstow Mansions was her reported address in 1951 when she appeared in court on a driving charge. Named as Ann Jillian Stephens.

Edit:  She appears in the registers from 1956 to 1959 and is gone in 1960.

Potential lead given his date of residence at Danes Villa, his landowning occupation and the location.  That would be a tidy income taking the rent at Danes Villa into account.

Joseph also lies about his age on the Freemason records, unless the service papers are where he is lying about his age.

If he was really born in 1872/3 he would have been too old to join up. I believe the age limit was 38 in 1914.  Might be why he wasn't detained after his desertion and appears to have travelled freely during the war years.  I wonder if he needed to get back to the UK (or away from China) and a sponsored ticket back was an easy option.

Doesn't explain the freemasonry discrepancy though.

I had an interesting reply from Bisichi this afternoon.

..... Messrs A E Thomas and J T Balmer were despatched with the necessary prospecting equipment. The expedition was a fiasco and Thomas and Balmer were ordered home and not re-engaged.....

Just to add some context...
"A E thomas" was Albert Ernest Thomas d.25-May-1923 Barmouth.  He was a well respected and international mining engineer coming from a Cornish mining family.  His Brother, Father and Grandfather had all been the managers/captains of Dolcoath copper/tin mine for some 50 years.

Joseph Twigg Balmer on the other hand (according to the only evidence so far) seems to have taken up a mining career on the boat trip from Shanghai before signing up.  Customs clerk to Mining engineer seems a bit far fetched to me but he must have impressed someone after his desertion.
Edit: I've just seen the 1908 Freemasonry register give his profession as "mining engineer".

A E Thomas was also a Freemason, another of his brothers was master of Hayle lodge.
