Hi Carole,

Tks for the suggestion.

I think you may be correct about Amelia dying before 1837.  I have checked Monmouthshire burials but of course, they may have moved away.  Wider searches on Ancestry and Find my Past have drawn a blank.

I have also age checked the national GRO indexes up to 1881.

No point in checking for Thomas Evan's death as I don't have any info at all to go on.

Hi Talacham

Tks for the reply.  My couple were indeed married at St Mary the Virgin, Monmouth and that is where the banns were read also.

There is a conflicting document on Ancestry which confirms this but adds a bit more info - stating that the couple were living in Abergavenny.  Surely if this was the case, the banns would be read there?

Looking for some help locating this couple after their marriage.  I cannot find any trace of them.  I have pieced together Amelia's history but have nothing for Thomas Evans.

They married at Monmouth St Marys on 17 July 1825.  Both signed their names and both were said to be of the parish.  Witnesses were John and Frances Morgan.

I have checked the original marriage certificate and banns on Ancestry but there is no further information.  Strangely, Ancestry have provided a transcript which says both bride and groom were living in Abergavenny.  I can't work out the source of this.

Amelia had a complicated past.  She was baptised twice - in 1804 and 1816,  as Meliora Neat, the illegitimate daughter of Frances Neat.

Frances Neat married John Morgan in 1812.  He was a blacksmith who later became the sexton at Monmouth St Mary's church.  He died in 1845 aged 68 so born abt 1777.  His ancestry is also a mystery.

I found 7 baptisms in Monmouthshire with parents Thomas & Amelia Evans.  These were all the offspring of Monmouthshire born Thomas Evans and Amelia Warren who married in Bristol and settled in Goldcliff, Monmouthshire.

Thanks for the further contributions.  All very relevant.

I have been in touch with the Archive Office and have received great help and huge encouragement. There are lots of brewery records, trade directories etc as well. I understand that everything is filed under "Pendarves Arms".  One explanation for the name confusion may be that there was, and still is,  another inn with the same name not too far away at Tuckingmill.  There are some references to "the Pendarves Arms, the inn at Beacon", that likely just got shortened to Beacon Inn which over time, became the official name.

Great stuff on the Chapel and Trevithick as well!

Hi Alan

Gosh!  What a great job you have done for me.  I am over the moon with this.  Certainly more info here than I have collected over the past 2 months.

The Inn is much older than I thought it would be - I was expecting around 1870s.  Also much larger.
I have not come across the earlier name so will look out for this.

So excited that I don't really want to go out for Sunday lunch - would much prefer to start delving further and kick starting my research.

So much appreciated.

Thank you lots.

I would appreciate any suggestions on where I might find  online sources regarding the history of the village of Beacon and the Beacon Inn.  Have not yet found anything by Google and Camborne library could not  assist.

Many thanks

Hi

Does anyone know whether this place is still operating.  The Familysearch website states only open Thursday between 10.30-15.30.

Emailed a couple of times without receiving a reply.  Found the church ok today but everything seemed locked up.

Would be interested to learn more about the facilities & help available.

Tks
