Hi Scribble thank you for your kind wishes! Don't reckon it will be much of a holiday with all the research I will have to do  :P Seriously, we can not wait to visit this beautiful country and it's gorgeous cities. We are in cork for 4 nights and I am hoping to get as much research done ahead of our arrival so that I can enjoy the sights outside of the archival rooms! Cheers David Power

Hi Sinnann, thank you for your interest and suggestions.

I will manually go through the register that is available online and see what I can find.

I will contact the Cathedral ahead of our visit and the Cork City Library.

Thanks again

Cork / William Francis Power and Mary Russell Power
« on: Wednesday 19 April 17 05:31 BST (UK)  »
Good afternoon everybody. Ahead of our visit to Cork in August, I was hoping you wonderful people could help with a road block we have encountered!

The following is a link to the marriage record of my GGGGGrand Parents, William and Mary Power (note Russell is spelt Russel in the online record):

http://registers.nli.ie//registers/vtls000633155#page/36/mode/1up

Are these records available for the public to physically view?

Mary Russell had two brothers in the Dominican Order and two of her sons also joined the Order, more on them later.

I believe I have found the Baptism records for most of their children as follows:

Bartholomew Power Baptised Sept 1827  Sponsors: Bartholomew Russell and Jane Leahy

Charles Patrick Power Baptised  Aug 1831  Sponsors: Thomas Russell and BARBARA POWER

Fame Maria Power Baptised April 1833  Sponsors: Edward Power and Mary Flynn

Thomas Power Baptised 26 Sep 1834  Sponsors: Thomas Russell and Catherine Browne

Jane Geraldine Power Baptised 28/12/1838  sponsors: Joseph Flynn and Mary E Murphy

Garrett Dominick Power Baptised 1st March 1842 Sponsor WILLIAM PIERCE POWER

Now the roadblock, well a few actually...

I can not find the baptism/birth record for their two eldest children, Barbara Mary Power and William Pierce Power.

I can not find the death record of William Francis Power. I believe I have his baptism record in 1795...which gives a strong clue to his parents  ;D

Barbara Mary Power was born c1821 and married Bernard Murray (see dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940) in August 1852. There is a reference to the marriage in the Cork Examiner 11th August 1852 - which I have not seen this article. Barbara and Bernard moved to Newry via Dublin. Barbara died in Newry in 1879. Mary Russell Power also moved in with the Murray's probably following the death of her husband William Francis Power. There is a reference/obituary in The Cork Examiner that a William F Power died on 12th October 1861 aged 66years - I have yet to see this article.

William Pierce Power migrated to Australia and according to his Australian marriage certificate was born in Cork in 1820 and according to his Aussie Death Certificate was born in Cork in 1823.

Thanking you in anticipation!

Oh and any other information people find about the Power/Russell family would also be appreciated.

Kind regards

David Power

Hi

I'm new to the list. I'm not sure I can help you, but I'm hoping you or someone else may be able to help me with a similar Leahy query.  My great great grandmother, Margaret Leahy, was transported from Cork to VDL in 1852, for shoplifting. She was 17 at the time (so DOB c 1835). Her convict records give her mother's name as 'Mary', brothers as James, John & Edward (so father's name likely to be one of these?) and sisters Honora, Mary, Catherine and Bridget. I know I'm clutching at straws, hoping that someone researching Leahy in Cork may have stumbled across Margaret's family (I don't even know what town she came from!). Her first daughter, to an English convict in Tasmania, was called Mary Ellen - which sounds more Irish than English, so I suspect there was an Ellen in Margaret's family too - grandmother or favourit aunt perhaps?  The only other clue I have is that the shoplifting conviction was her second - she was previously convicted at Cork for stealing money from a Mr Power.

Cheers
Karen

Hi Karen I am researching the Power's from Cork, In particular William Francis Power, who was a merchant in Cork. Are you able to email me your information source regarding the earlier conviction? Cheers David (oldaussieboy lol)

This is one of her children? Sue gave you this information back in Reply #44 in the Thomas CREECH thread. Link given by Sue above.

POWER Harry
Father Thomas Russell
Mother Elizabeth BERNARD
Birth Place MELB
Year 1865
Reg  10285

If you could hunt up the inquest details you say you have already posted and put up a link or copy the information it would people having to go back and look for it. Edit to add - newspaper report shown below.

Over her lifetime Eliza/beth seems to have used the name BERNARD and POWER so perhaps there's documentation in both names.

What information do you have for Eliza BERNARD dying in Melbourne Gaol?

If this is her death then information about the cause of death, burial, children, marriages, parents etc would have been asked for at the registration of the death.. Of course, as she died in an institution it's possible that the informant may not have known much, if anything, about her early life.

Victoria, Death 1880, #1907
Eliza BERNARD,  42

Judith

Hi Judith

Thank you for all of that. Here is the link to the Coroners Report: http://access.prov.vic.gov.au/public/veo-download?objectId=090fe273820232ef&format=pdf&docTitle=BernardEliza18809Female&encodingId=Revision-2-Document-1-Encoding-1-DocumentData

The only information I have is the death registration, if it is "our" Eliza then her age should have been 47, not 42. I will order her death certificate but I am not at all hopeful that it will reveal anything as the summary contains many  "unknown" statements.

Yes the Harry Power above is her only known son. It is interesting to note that Harry did not list Thomas Russell Power as his father on his marriage certificate. Harry stated his father was Harry Power. Also on Harry's death certificate Elizabeth Bernard is listed as his mother and no father was recorded.

Thank you for your interest

David

Electoral Rolls are available online  for Victoria from 1903

From 1903 to 1909 Kate Ann POWER lived at 53 Carlisle St. St Kilda.
Over those years she is listed either as being of independent means or performing home duties.
No others of the surname are with her.

In 1903 man named Thomas Russell POWER is listed at 230 Leicester St. Carlton. Independent means. No others of the surname are with him.

So it would appear from at least 1903, the couple were not together.

I have read Kate Ann POWER's  will.
Sue

Hi Sue

I have found a divorce record (and ordered the case from PROV) for Thomas and Kate in 1892, assuming the case proceeded it will be an interesting read as back in the day...there was fault/cause in divorce.  Cheers David ps ty for reviving this post!

Hello David. I'm sure someone will be able to help you, but I think it would be an idea to post what you already know about Eliza, including a link to the inquest, to save people going over old ground and supplying you with information you already have.

Hi Ruskie, thanks for that I will post link once the VPRO site is running smoothly...links are not loading this arvo. A few years ago there were a lot of posts about Eliza and her 2nd "husband" Thomas Russell Power...all became very complicated. Hence, I thought I would try a more simpler approach.

Elizabeth Hannah Bernard married a Charles T Lewis in London and migrated to Melbourne.

I can not find a record of their divorce or her subsequent marriage to Thomas Russell Power. Elizabeth was the informant for the birth registration of one of their children, Harry Power, and stated she and Thomas were married in Collingwood in 1860

I have been searching cemetery records, as only executed prisoners were buried at the gaol, without luck.

Likewise, I have got no where with police records.

Cheers

Good afternoon all, nervous newbie back seeking help from this wonderful site  ;D

I am trying to find out any information about Eliza Bernard (I have posted an extract of her Coroners Inquest elsewhere on the site).

Eliza died in the Melbourne Gaol in 1880 and I believe she is my GGGGM.

I am trying to find where she is buried, any marriage(s), any divorce(s) and any details of her children.

I have all sorts of possible information about her, but it is time that fresh eyes looked at her case!

Thank you for your interest
