Hello Lodger,
Many thanks for posting information in regard to the Headstone & in particular the additional info on James McKinlay who was buried there 1871. I have been searching for his burial place for some time!
James married 3 times, his 3rd wife Mary McConnell emigrated with her surviving children to New Zealand in 1874. Their eldest child Mary McKinlay is my husband's great grandmother.
You inquired about the McKinlay/Gardner connection. James Mckinlay and his first wife Mary McNeil had 2 children - William (emigrated to Novia Scotia) & Margaret (emigrated to New Zealand). She married George Gardner in New Zealand and had several children all born NZ.
James McKinlay & Mary McConnell surviving children in New Zealand also married and there are several McKinlay descendants here in NZ and Australia.
You mentioned there are several McKinlay children buried in the old churchyard. I am still looking for the burial place for Thomas born 1868, John born 1866, Marion born 1862.
Many thanks for the McKinlay information, much appreciated. regards Glynnis Paton
