Suffolk / FITCH & CLAYDON in Gazeley
« on: Tuesday 16 March 10 18:01 GMT (UK)  »
Martin Y. helped me with a lookup a couple of years ago, but I'm still puzzling over this wedding record:

Joseph Hales and Elizabeth Fitch married 13 Oct 1814 in Gazeley, Suffolk. Joseph and Elizabeth were both single and of this parish. They both made their marks, the witnesses were Margaret Crack and William Farthing (prob. the parish clerk) and the marriage was performed by William Gataker (curate) after banns.

Martin also found a possible baptism record for Elizabeth Fitch in Gazely:

Elizabeth d/o George and Amphillis FYTCHE was baptised 28 (?) Aug 1791.  George FITCH married Amphillis CLAYDON 16 Aug 1777 (witnesses William FITCH and John Ca..??)  Martin did not find any subsequent records of Joseph and Elizabeth Hales in Gazeley, which could be consistent with the couple having moved back to Joseph's birth place in Barley, Herts.  The census records indicate that Elizabeth was probably born in Suffolk, but that's my only evidence linking her to Gazeley.

So I still can't prove that my Joseph and Elizabeth Hales who lived in Barley were the same couple who married in Gazeley in 1814. So I'm hoping to connect with anyone who might be researching the Fitch and Claydon family of Gazeley in the hope that some other information turns up.

I also found a tree on ancestry that showed three children of George Fitch and Amphillis Claydon: George, Anna or Hannah, and Mary Fitch, born 17 Aug 1794, Gazeley.  I hope to hear from anyone who is researching this family.  Perhaps mtDNA testing might establish a connection.

thanks,
Gail

Hi Forest,

There are a couple records in the LDS/IGI that might be your Sarah:
SARAH CAKEBREAD Christening: 09 JUL 1786 Broxbourne, Hertford
Parents: WILLIAM CAKEBREAD & SARAH

WILLIAM CAKEBREAD Spouse: SARAH PECK
Marriage:  12 APR 1779  Broxbourne, Hertford

Also, here is a link to a site with more info on the distribution of the Cakebread surname:
http://www.denspages.co.uk/roots/cakebread/genfr.htm

I have Cakebread ancestors in Barley, Herts.

best wishes,
Gail

Rick - thank you for the link!  I will email the Gazely volunteer. Also, thanks so much for viewing the 1851 census.

Juddee - I think we emailed already about the Hales family of Barley? Did you get a recent email from me? I have connected with another Barley Hales descendent who believes that the Hales were originally from Barkway, Herts.

Thanks again!
Gail

Can anyone check the original parish record for this wedding that is listed in the LDS/IGI:

JOSEPH HALES
Spouse:  ELIZABETH FITCHE
Marriage:  13 OCT 1814      Gazeley, Suffolk,
Bishop's transcripts, 1560-1853  Church of England. Archdeaconry of Sudbury

I'm looking for any information that might confirm or disprove that Joseph Hales was from Barley, Herts.

The Barley census records indicate that his wife Elizabeth was born in "Bann", Suffolk probably about 1788, and their first child George was bapt in Barley on 30 April 1815.   I'd also welcome any suggestions about the correct spelling of "Bann" - possibly Barham, Bacton, Baylham or Barrow?

Thanks!
Gail
