Great to find this website and to see that I'm not the only one trying to find out more about Jacobus David Samuel Hirsch. I am a direct 5th generation descendant from his second marriage (1804) to Phennena Catharina Schleper (* July 2nd, 1772 + August 20th, 1838) and still carry the family name since his conversion in 1787. The origin of his new surname lies in the baptism date itself: Since Jacobus David Samuel Hirsch was baptised as a Catholic in Meppen on August 28, 1787, he took the name of the day's Saint, i.e. St. Augustine of Hippo. His godfather was the local judge Carl Franz Morrien. He might have taken his new first name from him.

I live near Düsseldorf in Germany, not far from the Emsland, whose today's administrative centre is Meppen. After a few years, Carolus Josephus Augustin (aka Jacobus David Samuel Hirsch) bought a house in the immediate vicinity of the historic town hall and set up a shop there.

The photo in the first entry (Bolts99) is taken from the book "Land und Leute im Wandel der Zeit an Ems und Hase" by Hermann Friese. There is more information about his origins in the book, but not too much about his parents, yet apparently his father was involved in the skins, furs and horse trade in Lissa.

CJ Augustin himself is said to have been given the nickname “Augustin Hollandtü” in Meppen, this is because he also sold goods in Holland.

In Emsland there are two streets named after descendants of Carolus Josephus Augustin today: Nicolaus-Augustin-Straße in Meppen and Dr.-Augustin-Straße in Dörpen.

I also found a newspaper article about the origins of the Augustin family from 1989.

Do you have that article from 1989?  I would like to see it.   I am from the first marriage of David Samual Hirsch. My Wahden line moved to the United States in 1837.

Thank's for the book name. I had a german genealogy researcher find that for me but this is one of my few brick walls left to find.

Hi Christoph,
thank you for these interesting infos.

I've found a 312 page pdf file in the internet which has a lot of info about the silk manufacturer David Hirsch:

https://medien.bwv-verlag.de/Open_Access/9783830542483.pdf

He lived from 1700 to 1773.

But unfortunatelly I couldn't find any remark that he adopted a nephew.

Would really be nice to find any evidences of the time before our ancestor came to Meppen and some more details about his parents and so on.

As I wrote before I did a lot of research of his direct descendants and I found out that nearly all of his descendant (if not all) which are living today will be descendants of him with his first wife. They together had four children:

1) Johanna Maria Elisabeth Augustin, *22.10.1789, married Ludwig Wahden. One of their children emigrated already 1837 to Cole County, Missouri, USA and renamed to "Watton".

2) Carolus Josephus Augustin, *23.5.1792. One of his children emigrated 1870 to Portsmouth, Ohio, USA. I'm in direct contact with descendants of him which are still living in Ohio.

3) Johannes Bernardus Augustin, *22.6.1795, was major of Haselünne.

4) Johanus Henricus Antonius Augustin, *13.4.1799. One of his childs (my ancestor Nicolaus Augustin) was mayor of Meppen from 1871 till 1897.

Who of them is your direct ancestor ?

Regards,
Dirk

Dirk my direct ancestor is the Wahden one. Herman Watton was the one that immigrated to the United States with his in laws, wife's family.

Okay here is my road block.

I am trying to find more information on Joes Jungesblut. I have found the last name to be spelled as Jungesbluth as well. But have come across on some records while researching this family as the last name as Schweide as well. His wife is Angela Maria Lisemeyr. I have found her last name as Lisenmeyer or Lisemeyer. The couple was married in Delbruk, Paderborn, Germany on November 9 1779.  They had two sons that I have been able find. Joes Mauritines (Moritz) born June 9 1781 and Joes Librius Stephen born April 9 1786.

I know Angela Maria Lisemeyer's parents could possible be Joannes George LIsenmeyer and Clara Anna Kuhlmeyer. They were married October 15 1743 in Westenholz which is part of Delbruk today. I have her date of birth possibly as either September 20 1746 or December 24 1753. The couple had two daugthers by the same name.

What I am trying to find is when Joes Jungesbluth was born. I have been able to find him down as Franz for his children's baptismal records. I have attached the marriage record. If needing more records I can provide them. I have found these records on marticula.

If he was born in Leszno you could have a look at Poznan Project website

https://poznan-project.psnc.pl

You'll find basic info there on parents names and dates but no cert itself. Still good place to start

Thanks but it states it's only from 1800-1899. Mine were before that time frame I am trying to find but I will still take a look to see if I can find anything else.

Okay I am trying to find more information about this man. Jacobus David Samuel Hirsch. All I know is that he was born in 1762 in Liza Prussia. But now that village is in present day Poland and the name is changed to Leszno. He was born and raised Jewish. One of two children that I know if per this page and he had a sister. From what I translated is that he left home when he was 21 and wanted to be Catholic instead of Jewish. So his father disinherited him. How do I go about finding out more information about his parents and even find a full date of birth for him. I have his records for when he was in Meppen Germany when get got baptized, married and even death.  I have attached a page that was in a book in Meppen Germany I  was able to get form a researcher.

She is not willing to acknowledge this at all. She got the information off another family tree via ancestry.com and taking it for the gospel truth.  The thing is that tree had no sources for records and I do.

I have tried to share information but she doesn't want to share information on their end but I will reaching out again.

It's Bolte without the two dots above the "O". That's how I have always found it via family search and how it's appeared in church records.  I was going off of what that one cousin put on the tree via family search.

I found his information on family search and also by searching on marticula as well. They have the church records there for the catholic church parishes.

I have approached her about this but she is not budging on prividing proof.

I have included his baptismal and death records that I was able to find.

Okay I am at a cross roads in this village.

I have found my 3x's great grandfather Wilhelm Bolte being born in this Westenholz, Paderborn, Germany in September 1829. Parents are John Henrich Stephen Bolte and Anna Angela Maria (Schweide) Jungenbluth.  There are several ways to spell the mother's last name. I have seen it as Jungesbluth, Jungesblut.

Here is the kicker I have his dad's place of birth as the same village of Westenholz Germany.  However a potential cousin states he was born in Mecklenbug-Vorpommern, Germany around 1800 instead of the dob I have listed down as March 14 1806. His date of death I have down is September 12 1839 in the same village. The other person has it listed down as September 7 1865 in Mecklenburg. Wife Anna is listed as dying in 1865 in West Point, Iowa. I have his wife anna possibly dying in Chicago in 1878.  She was born in 1806 as well.

Which can't be the case since his wife Anna remarried not too long after he passed away. Had another child with second husband. Immigrated to the United States in the 1840's to St Louis Missouri.

This potential cousin has not been able to provide me proof of how they got the information they did and told me I am wrong in my research.

How would I go about getting such said proof for the other village since apparently I am in the wrong about the research. This person got real defensive when I provided proof I was able to find the right village.

Any suggestions.
