Essex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Bartholomew family White Colne.Earles Colne
« on: Monday 19 December 22 16:22 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Sandra
I've just had q quick look at the other people you mention in your post

In my FT, I have a marriage between a Hannah Bartholomew and a John Higgleton in Sep 1859, but this Hannah is the daughter of Robert Bartholomew and Susan Purkis, ch Sep 16 1827 in White Colne.
John was a widower, having previously been married to Lydia Pitchford and having 8 children - which fits with there being 3 children in the 1861 Census - all from the first marriage.  Robert and Susan had a total of 11 children, but not one named Matilda.

However FreeReg does have a Matilda Bartholomew ch Oct 28 1855 in White Colne to Parents Joesph and Hannah - so  you are right about one of Amelia's sisters

With regard to Florence Emma Clayden - her mother's maiden name was Stokes according to the GRO and there is a Clayden/Stokes marriage in 1874 in St Pancras.  I can't find a 1881 census record with Florence and Hannah Bartholomew (or Higgleton) in the same family.

With regard to the Clayden/Bartholomew marriage in 1899 in Romford, I note there was another Amelia Bartholomew b in 1877 in West Ham.  She would have been 22 in 1899, but you would need to get the marriage certificate to confirm her age.

The Bartholomew family can be a bit of a nightmare to research, as I've found to my cost, but I hope this clears up a few anomalies for you

Hi Sandra

If you check out the Bartholomew Records in FreeReg, you will find your two Amelia Bartholomews baptised on Sep 23 1849 in White Colne and June 2 1850 (b Apr 2 1850) in Earls Colne, both in the Halstead District.  Parents are Joseph & Hannah and Charles & Hannah.
There is also the burial record for Amelia Bartholomew on Jan 18 1866 age 15.

There is a marriage record in Earls Colne for Amelia Bartholomew (age 19) to James Lawrence on Nov 16 1867 - her father's name is recorded as Joseph.  This is a simpler explanation for why she isn't in the 1871 and subsequent Census records.

I've researched Bartholomews (and Brunnings) in the Colne Area of North Essex because my Maternal Grandmother was Florence Bartholomew (b 1884) who married Golden Brunning in Earls Colne.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the information

Shaun indicated that the Express left Genoa on Sep 7 1866 and arrived in the UK early October
Your dates for Deal and Gravesend are Sep 6 1866 and Sep 7 1866 - which is right ?

I thought Minories might be Minorca - but independently, someone suggested Minories was the address of the Mercantile Marine Office in Greenwich dealing with deaths at sea - and Ht St was an abbreviation for Hammett Street, also in Greenwich.  Certainly Ht St appears in a number of the records of the "Register of Effects & Wages" forms I looked at between the pages where Henry's name appears

Thanks very much for that information - it certainly fits in with the other facts we have established.

Is there a source that I can attribute to the information when I update my FT ?

Do you happen to know the I/D No. of the "Express" there seem to have been a number of vessels with the same name in the 1860s

Thanks again

Essex / Henry Pennick (Brightlingsea) - Understanding a Death at Sea - 1866

Death of a Merchant Navy Seamen at Sea

Can anyone help me understand the various Merchant Navy forms involved with the death of my Great Grandfather Henry Pennick ? who came from Brightlingsea, Essex

We have his AC3 Agreement & Account of Crew Form for the vessel Britannia (25394) but was discharged sick in Genoa on Aug 8 1866
On his Certificate Form, the British Consul confirmed he had been discharged and another seaman appointed in his place.
The stamps indicate the vessel departed the same day, but there are later stamps from Consuls in Mahon (Menorca), Garrucha & Almeria (Spain) indicating dates when a vessel arrived, Articles were deposited and  Articles retrieved - the latest date on the form being Sep 11 1866
The Mahon and Almeria stamps appear to have been on separate sheets attached to this record

Are these Stamps indicating the route that Britannia took towards Gibraltar, or is this the route that Henry himself took on another vessel ?

I also have 2 records in the Register of Accounts of Wages & Effects of Deceased Seamen relating to Penwick Hy on Britannia in 1866 (pages157 & 162)
In the first column the date of receiving Form KK (reporting his death at sea) was Oct 25 1866 and the Port from which it was received was "Minories" but on the second record the date was Oct 29 1866 and the Port was "Ht St" - anyone recognise these Ports ?

The column "Rating on Board" is ticked - but Britannia left him in Genoa - confusing !!

No date of Death is given - just the letters "ex" and the Place of death is "Express" (with the punctuation marks)  Does anyone understand this ?

His offspring thought he had been taken to hospital in Gibraltar (from Britannia) and was returning back to the UK on another vessel when he died at sea. However I cannot find any record for him in the Register of Deaths at Sea

Any help would be much appreciated

Essex / Re: Pre-1841 censuses: Brightlingsea 1831, Elmstead 1811

Hi Helvissa

Many thanks for the Brightlingsea 1831 census results, which together with the FreeReg site referenced in these posts has helped me resolve an important link in my Pennick FT.  I've been trying to connect a Joseph Pennick (b West Mersea in 1790) with a John Pennick (b Tollesbury in 1793) who, according to our family history (from a 1944 letter) were brothers.

From John's baptism record on FreeReg, his parents are listed as Samuel and Ann Pennock - the same as I had already found for Joseph, and on his marriage in Brightlingsea in 1817, Joseph is one of the witnesses.

Now in the 1831 census, you have a Joseph and a John Pennock listed, both from the same original page, so cleary living close to each other.  What does the "re ics" against Joseph's record mean ?

I realise that in the "handwritten age" a badly written "i" with a faint or missing dot can easily be interpreted as an "o" and can quite see how my surname can be transcribed as Pennock or Pennick, but with both Joseph's and John's marriage records in Brightlingsea on FreeReg recorded as Pennick, I'm on a safe bet that they are the same families.

Both families were involved in the oyster business, with Joseph listed on the 1826 Brightlingsea voters list as an "oyster dredger".  They are missing in the 1841 Census but I eventually found them in Jersey in the Channel Isles, with other Brightlingsea families - chasing the oysters.  Later on, John's family seems to have moved to Falmouth and Shoreham, which from my researches are linked to Brightlingsea via the oyster trade.

This may be of interest to others with Brightlingsea fishermen in their families

Thanks again

Hi Gary,

Yes your line is another Howard family in my tree.
I believe Fred  Jr (your grandad) had sisters Gladys and Grace.
Fred Sn married Ada Norris. Let me know if I am correct about these.
I have more information on the Beadle line. Emily's parents were John (c1819-1896) and Jane Beadle (nee Brunning)(c1820-1899) John was born in Halstead and was a shoemaker and Jane was born in Long Melford Suffolk. I have earlier information on the Beadle and Brunning families if you are interested.
Do you have any information about Edward Jr's mother as I cannot place an Edward Sn ?

Jane Brunning   ch   3rd September 1815 in Long Melford
   m   23rd February 1840 in Halstead, Essex
bu  16th May 1899 in Long Melford
Husband   John Beadle   b   1820 in Halstead
d   Mar* 1896 in Halstead District
Jane is the sister of my maternal grandmother's grandmother Caroline Brunning and I can stretch the Brunning FT back to 1700
