I've never heard that saying but will check with my father as he will probably know it.

It's good to know that Charles sister thought him decent and trustworthy.

I came across an in memoriam notice for my great uncle who committed suicide in 1916.

It reads as follows:
Waters. - In loving remembrance of Charles Alexander Waters, who died May 25th 1916.  A white man, whose memory lives. From sister Rose.

I was a little puzzled by the wording 'a white man'.  As far as I am aware he was white, his parents were so, unless he was not really his father's son, I can't think why this would be written.

Has anyone ever come across such wording before?  Charles' story always saddens me and it was lovely to think his eldest sister had not forgotten him but I am intrigued by that wording.

A little background:  Charles was cook on SS Toronto (troop ship), he waited till the ship had left Southampton and cut his throat with a razor.  He left a suicide note but it did not explain why, just stating he was mad and asking God to forgive him.

I'm trying to guess an approximate date for the attached photo.  The second in from the left (next to the lady who appears to be crocheting) is my grandmother (born in 1900) but I'm hopeless at guessing age so hoped there might be a clue in the girls clothing.

Many thanks for that advice.  My grandfather was on HM Rescue Tugs which is how I came across the T124T agreement.  I rather thought from what I'd read about it that it would only be a few pages at most, so your explanation makes sense. I will try to go down the researcher route depending on cost.

Hi there

Can anyone please tell me what is included in a T124T Agreement?

I requested an estimate to get a copy of my grandfather's T124T from the National Archives and they have quoted me £70.20 for 54 x A3 sheets.

Would one record for one person normally be that large?  54 A3 sheets seems an awful lot of paperwork but then not knowing what the T124T agreement involves, maybe this is normal?

This photograph was found amongst my grandmother's photographs.

I suspect it may be her father who died in 1900 just a few weeks before she was born, but I don't know for sure.  It has been suggested it could be one of her brothers but that would put it post WW1 and it looks older to me though I'm no expert.
If anyone give me an idea of what date this might be I would much appreciate it.  I'll never know for sure but would like to think it is my great grandfather.

Having compared my grandfather's photo side by side with the one you posted James, and having googled the different badges, I came to the same conclusion as Hugh, that the badges were different so he must have been Petty Officer.  I will wait and see what I get from BT390.

Hi and thanks for all your replies.

I have my grandfather's Seaman's Discharge Books from 1938 to 1961 so know the dates are all correct.  I only found out a couple of days ago what a T124T agreement is - this is on his record next to the period he was with the Rescue Tugs.  I saw that a copy of this is obtainable from the NA so have already requested an estimate to get a copy:  Robert Thomas (should be Thompson) Ross born in Dundee 24/11/1894.  No. on Continuous Certificate of Discharge R166771.

My reason for querying the uniform is that all the information I have states his rating as 'donkeyman', 'donkeyman + greaser' or 'fireman', even whilst with the Rescue Tugs. 

If he was a CPO at the time then it is not mentioned anywhere on the records we have.
I too was puzzled by the ribbons and scarf.

I will keep digging.  Thanks so much for all your input.

He was in the Merchant Navy from 1938 to 1960, only on HM Rescue Tugs between April 1942 and November 1945.  This is why I queried the uniform.
