I hadn't thought about membership of Sussex family history group but will definitely consider it, good thinking!
Thanks again for your help. Think I'll put it all away for tonight, maybe some great ideas will come tome overnight!  :)

Sussex Lookup Requests / Re: Marshall/Elphick

Thanks HL for doing those lookups for me, now I'm more confused than ever, I have been looking at all the info I have and cannot decide which Richard is "mine".   ???
This is some of what I can verify through census, civil reg. certs etc.
Richard Elphick  (3xgtgrandfather) born 1817 at Herstmonceaux to parents Richard Elphick, born 1785,at Herstmonceaux  and Martha Cruttenden, born about 1815 at Hollington SSX. Richard(1785) died in Hawkhurst, Kent in 1869 aged 84. I have him on 41, 51 and 61 census all in Hawkhurst. Martha died in 1849 aged 53 so she only appears on 41 census.
Richard (1817) married in 1836 to Bathsheba Friend born 1815 at Hawkhurst. They came to Aus. but sadly Richard died enroute, Bathsheba and 2 sons arrived here 1841. I am unsure of how to go about finding any further info to verify who were Richard's (1785) parents, can't be 100% sure that William Elphick and Mille Marshall are the ones, although they seem most likely, however if you take into consideration of naming patterns, Mille, Mildred,Millicent do not appear in later generations, but William and Richard appear time and again! Hope someone can make sense of all this, thought maybe I'd just put it out there, sometimes another person can see something different!
Regards, Shirl.

Thanks so much Jane I did not have that info, excellent work!
And also thanks HL,  I actually wondered if Mille was an abbreviation of Mildred or Millicent. I also suspect that William's parents may have been Richard and Sarah Lulham? Once again thanks so much to both of you. :) :) :) :)

Sussex Lookup Requests / Marshall/Elphick

Have a marriage for Mille Marshall and William Elphick, 4th May 1780 at Herstmonceaux, Sussex, and suspect they MAY be the parents of my 4xgtgrandfather Richard Elphick who was chr. at Herstmonceaux 25 Dec 1785. Would love to find any further information regarding this family eg. birth and death dates of William and Mille. Their other children may have been William 1780 Thomas 1780, another William 1783, Mary 1781, John 1787. Richard Elphick (1785) married Martha Cruttenden, at Hollington, SSX, 1812, they eventually lived at Hawkhurst Kent.
Hopefully someone can set me on the right track regarding these families.
Shirl.

Thanks so much Victor.
I don't suppose there are any entries in register for birth/baptism and death of Jesse Gribble and birth/baptism of William Gribble,? and long shot I know, but any mention of Thomas Gribble's or Hester Avery's parents. I would be so grateful if you could check. Thanks in advance,
regards, Shirl.

Gloucestershire / Gribble from Bristol

Thomas Gribble born around 1809. Maybe his parents were Thomas Gribble and Hester unknown.Thomas jnr began his life of crime when he was tried and convicted for "stealing lead affixed", along with 3 other men, one being Thomas Rivers who shall be mentioned later! Thomas was imprisoned for 6 months. Thomas married Hester Avery 1829 in Bristol, they had 2 children; Jesse, 1829-1830 and William born about 1830.Thomas was tried and convicted on 13/7/1830, for picking pockets and sentenced to 7 years transportation,(to New South Wales). Hester Avery then married Thomas Rivers (who was of the right age to have been Thomas Gribble's previous partner in crime). Thomas served his sentence and married Jane Irwin, also a convict, in 1848 and they continued their life of crime, according to various newspaper reports and police gazettes.
There was a William Gribble, born about 1812, who may have been a brother to our Thomas. William is mentioned in the UK Prison Hulk Registers and Letters book 1802-1849, he had been sentenced to death for highway robbery, this later changed to transportation for life. He was 18 yrs old and was received onto the ship (hulk)? Justitia moored at Woolwich, 14th September 1830. He was transported to VDL aboard the Red Rover. His parents may have been Thomas Gribble and Hester unknown. They'd had a mass christening 16th Nov.1823 for 7 children, but not Thomas who was possibly already off training to be a criminal!
Hoping someone else is researching this family, would love to find more information I'm so intrigued by their story.
Shirl.
