Durham / Re: wheres John ?
« on: Saturday 25 April 15 14:27 BST (UK)  »
Just following up on my last post I did find the following which may be of help to at least finding the date of his death.

Durham 1851 census..........John Mawson aged 8      Born 1843

Durham 1901 census...........John Mawson aged 58 (stone worker and miner underground)

Durham 1911 census...........John Mawson aged 68 (coal miner - stoneman)

Bit more than a coincidence I think that the John Mawson who died in 1883 aged 23 was also a stoneworker underground. Could this have your Johns son....born in 1860 when your John was 17.

Thats about all I can help with im afraid as I dont subscribe to any of the paysites. Id suggest a visit to Durham councils registry of Births Marriages & Deaths as it seems doubtful he moved out of the area if still there aged 68 (and still working!)..........Good Luck

This isnt the John you are looking for but would clearly be related and the link at the bottom may put you in contact with others who could help, best of luck

You may also want to look at this link of someone tracing a John Mawson from Co Durham born about 1840

Just wondering if anyone may be able to help.

Given that along with his victory medal (no star medal) I also have a piece of trench art decorated with the words 'Somme France' '1914-17' and the letter 'G' and also another piece decorated with the word 'Rouen', I understand this is where most of the allied hospitals were sited.

It would be nice to know if he survived the war and the significance of the letter 'G'

Thanks in anticipation

I just wondered if anyone had any information on this chap. I have his silver identity bracelet and know that he married in 1950 but have no information regarding his Army service though I believe he was with an Anti Aircraft regiment in UK.

Hi again David

I agree with you.

Ernest was a full time soldier who enlisted in 1902 and I have no mention of any children, he wasnt discharged until 1946 (with a break between the wars) so I dont feel the family group has anything to do with him.

To me it makes more sense that it is Kate and Henry with their two children and the date on the back doesnt refer to the date of the picture.  This would also make sense because Charlotte was born in 1911 in the picture im guessing she is maybe 3 or 4 so her father would be in uniform as he enlisted in 1914.

Can I once again thank you for all your  help, with that initial information about Baths BMD I doubt I would have solved this so quickly.
Regards Rod
