Census and Resource Discussion / Re: Another rant about (some) Ancestry users
« on: Sunday 07 February 16 15:06 GMT (UK)  »
I think the fault behind this is the Ancestry 'hints'.  Some users go on a click-fest.

I think she's fixed it now but a Canadian researcher attached my G-Grandfather who was born, worked and died in the UK, to her 36,000 strong Americas tree.  He was in good company for a while, amongst relatives such as Henrietta Maria of France, Charles V, Mary 1 and Abraham Lincoln to mention but a few of the luminaries.

And of course once the trees get this large and incoherent - the more useless hints we have to wade through.

My renewal notice for Worldwide dated 27 November says £179.99.

However, since the new site was launched, I now get the option to upgrade the Worldwide Sub to All Access which includes the US sites Fold3.com and Newspapers.com.

Thanks Smud.  That's probably what's happened.  Strangely enough I've not had a renewal notice at all.  I guess if I hadn't looked myself, I'd have been shocked at that amount coming through DD.

I'll have to ring them anyway to check exactly how much they are taking.

I paid the 179 figure last year (December). Well, you'd better sit down - it's now £224.99 !

Thanks David, have been taking a look and it seems I won't lose anything if I cancel.  So I might just try it.

I distinctly recall starting my Ancestry sub last year without any special offers etc.  I've just checked my renewal information - it's due in 4 days - to find a whopping 25% increase in worldwide subs!  Has anyone else noticed this? With inflation almost negative in this country I can't understand it.

The Common Room / Re: 1939 Register up and running (Part 2)

The 1998 Act replaced and consolidated earlier legislation such as the Data Protection Act 1984 and the Access to Personal Files Act 1987. At the same time it aimed to implement the European Data Protection Directive. In some aspects, notably electronic communication and marketing, it has been refined by subsequent legislation for legal reasons.

KGarrad, thanks I just twigged, from the GenUKI text.  The railway ran through the town, and John was a railway worker according to his daughter - so perhaps he travelled with work?

Ah, well spotted Rosie, that's him.  But I can't find him anywhere in the 1951. Given that he married in '52 to a women in South Leverton, I expected him to remain local.

Sorry Stanmapstone, I meant district.  So these are not-subsets of a place such as Applesthorpe? My mistake.  I looked either side of the district 10 and couldn't see the district 11, so presumed it was missing.

Census and Resource Discussion / 1851 Schedule Pages missing from Ancestry
« on: Saturday 07 November 15 14:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I am looking for one John Moor[e] born in North Leverton Notts in 1831/2 I tried going through the images for the N. Leverton section: Applethorpe Notts but to no avail.  I noted on the front page of the Applethorpe section that there should be schedules 10 & 11 , but the Ancestry index only gives us section 10.

Has anyone experienced asking Ancestry/NA for the missing schedule to be found scanned and indexed?
