United States of America / Re: Ellen Brady crossed from Canada to US in 1928

Wow, that was fast - August 10, 1907 is the date I have for her birth and her parents were John Brady and Maggie Brady (Reilly).  You're right, she likely married, which makes the search much more difficult.  Thanks.

United States of America / Ellen Brady crossed from Canada to US in 1928
« on: Monday 10 August 15 13:44 BST (UK)  »
Hello.  I have traced my aunt, Ellen Brady, to a border crossing at St. Albans/Vermont in Feb. 1928.  She was from Ballyconnell Ireland, born in 1907, and emigrated to Montreal Canada in May 1927.  The destination, when she crossed to the US was Valhalla, New York to join a friend, Margaret Maguire. Her occupation was listed as "domestic".   The crossing document appears to list a Head Tax??? series DAH 39364.  Can I assume that once she was in the US she probably got a social security number?  If so, how would I find that out, and would I be able to trace her tracks through that?  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Renfrewshire / Sweet shop in Bridge of Weir - Cowans and McCartneys
« on: Wednesday 22 July 15 19:24 BST (UK)  »
I am researching the Cowans and McCartneys who lived in the Bridge of Weir area in Scotland.  Ellen Cowan, family originally from Fermanagh, Northern Ireland,  married James McCartney in 1879 in Bridge of Weir.  Ellen had a sister, Maggie, who married a William Kidd and apparently owned a sweet shop next to the bridge in Bridge of Weir.  Maggie died in 1942.  Does anybody know anything about these families or the sweet shop?  Thanks.

Hello.  I don't know about the Grange in Bridge of Weir, but can anybody tell me about a sweet shop that was next to the bridge in Bridge of Weir?  I am researching the McCartneys and the Cowans of this town.  Ellen Cowan married James McCartney.  Ellen's sister, Maggie, married a William Kidd and apparently owned the sweet shop.  No Children.  Anybody know anything about these people?  Thanks.

Cavan / Re: Bradys and Reillys in Kildallan

Hello Neli.  I'm afraid it is just a coincidence.  My Roseanne married a Eugene O'Reilly of the Irish Constabulary - lived for a while in Dublin and died there around 28 years of age and her husband and children then moved to Killeshandra.

Thanks, everybody, for your input about the Reillys and Maguires.  The familysearch.org definitely seems to be the family I described and Maggie's birthdate fits.  I wish I had more tangible evidence that this is absolutely definitely her, but I do see that there is a brother, John, and a Kate Reilly was listed as a sponsor on my father's sister's baptismal certificate. I also see names of my father, Thomas and Francis, and Dad also had a sister, Mary.  I know these are common names, but could be evidence of a family link.  Unfortunately, I have been unable to track down a marriage certificate for Maggie and John Andrew Brady, which may also give more information.  They would have been married prior to August 1905 when their first child, Mary, was born in the parish of Kildallan, County Cavan.  I really appreciate all the input so far.  Thanks.

Family History Beginners Board / Reillys/Maguires in Drumdarten
« on: Monday 06 July 15 21:29 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace the family of my Irish grandmother, Margaret (Maggie) Reilly.  I believe I have her birth certificate, which states that she is the daughter of JOHN REILLY and ANNE MAGUIRE.  She was born on 24 Feb. 1877.  The certificate states the registrar's district as Bawnboy, and the birth was registered in the district of Ballinamore in the county of Co. Leitrim.  Maggie married John Andrew Brady and lived as a farmer's wife in Carn, Kildallan, County Cavan until her death from tuberculosis at age 40 on 18th May, 1917.  She had a brother, John, mentioned on her death certificate.
I have looked for Drumdarten in the Census records but it doesn't seem to be there.  Could it have another name?  I also thought that Bawnboy and Ballinamore were in county Cavan.  Does anybody have information about these Reillys/Maguires of Drumdarten or where I should be looking in the Census?  Thanks.

Thanks for the link.  I also found some info about the FT section - refers to Fosse Temporaire, used by the poor working classes to rent (temporaire) a lot for 10 years, so there won't be a physical trace of him at the site, but fantastic to know the location.  It would appear that he is the only one at the site as his wife, Maggie, died in Ireland in 1917.  Norma

Wow, you're good - that sounds promising as his wife was Margaret (Maggie) Reilly - I know O was sometimes added.
I'm not sure why I wrote 10 August (late night typing error???) as his certificate does say August 9, 1961.
You don't mention the cemetery with John's info - is it the Notre Dame de Neiges that you mention with Emily's info? (In the documents that I have for Ellen - census, shipping record, birth certificate, there is no reference to Emily as an alternative name, so I'm not sure about her being the one buried there).
Do you know anything about the place John is buried?  I have always imagined him being in a nameless grave as he likely had no family and no money, so I'm wondering if Lot 01961 is that kind of area - perhaps a paupers' area for the 1961 deaths, or am I reading too much into it?
May I say, as a newcomer to RootsChat, that I am so impressed with the speed and helpfulness of everybody who has helped me so far.  Thanks.  Norma
