Westmorland / Re: 1787 Constables Census of Westmorland
« on: Sunday 22 June 25 19:11 BST (UK)  »
Eric,

You may already have the following information.

I had a look at Pauline's Book and found reference (p23) to the marriage of the Rev. Barton to Jane Sharpe in 1743 daughter of the Sharpe family of builders who settled in the area in 1676.  There are references to Captain Butcher (p69) who was a churchwarden and involved in providing answers for the 1834 Poor Law Commission Report.  I also found (p97) residing in Bowness 1831 Allis Butcher widow landed prop, and also in 1841 Allis Butcher independent.  There is a question mark over the dates if the following information found in the newspapers on view Findmypast.co.uk is correct.

3/3/1838 Kendal Mercury

On the 20th ult at his father's residence, Windermere of consumption, brought on by too close application  to study at the Royal Naval, Camberwell, John Butcher aged 18 years, eldest surviving son of William W Butcher Esq and grandson of the late Rev W Barton, Rector of Windermere, Westmorland.

Westmorland Gazette 29/9/1832

On Wednesday the 26th inst at Windermere the wife of William Wain Butcher Master in the Royal Navy of a son her thirteenth child.

Cumberland Pacquet and Ware's Whitehaven Advertiser 8/1/1839

After a short illness on New Years Day in Cecil Street, London, William Wain Butcher Esq of Bowness Windermere aged 60 years.

I would assume that there must be naval records for William.

Unfortunately, there were no returns from Windermere.  It looks as though the parishes in the south of Westmorland were not very good at completing their returns. I do have a copy of The Disappearing Yeomen, Windermere 1640-1841 by Pauline Wharton.  The information you are looking for might be in that book.

I have a copy of Vital Statistics The Westmorland Census of 1787 by Curwen Archive Trust.  Not all parishes returned the information.  Is there a particular area you are interested in?

The Common Room / Re: Strike and Riot in Sharples, Lancashire 1830
« on: Sunday 01 June 25 21:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I have looked at the newspaper reports available on findmypast.co.uk of the riot, but there is no indication as to the reasons why.

I have found reference to the Event mentioned in the Book "The Village of Astley Bridge" written by the late Norman Hindley (Friends of Astley Bridge) in which he mentions the Riot.  "In 1830 Henry Ashworth like other mill owners reduced wage rates when introducing larger machines.  This caused resentment and strikes". Norman mentioned that in 1840 there were concerns in the newspapers and Parliament of Henry Ashworth's treatment of his workers and his opinions on trade unions, working rules, hours of work and free trade.  The Book "The Ashworth Cotton Enterprise" written by Rhodes Boyson quoted by Norman mentions the piece rate offered was 10% lower than the rest of Bolton and the employees were find more often.

As some of the instigators were sent to Lancaster Assizes they may be mentioned in the newspapers etc.  Halliwell History Society of Bolton may be able to help.

Hope the is information is useful.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Re: Thewlis. Hinchliffe Mill/Holmfirh

Hi, As my husband's grandmother's maiden name was Thewlis I had a look on the family tree but she was a descendent of Titus Thewlis who lived in Huddersfield  I have had a look on Findmypast.co.uk; you may have this information already or it may not be what you are looking for.

Baptism Jonathan Thewlis 30/03/1795 Holmfirth. Birthplace Almondbury Wesleyan Meth, Father James of Scholes, Mother Nancy.  Parish of Kirkburton.

Initially, I had a look for Joshua in the 1841 without success. Then looked in the 1851 Census and found a Joshua aged 58 1793  Birthplace Cartworth  and a wool dyer  living at Spring Grove Upperthong Huddersfield.  He was living with his wife Esther, daughter Mary and son Tom.  Grandson Jonathan and Lodger Hannah Langley.  What is interesting is that the Grandson is named Jonathan.

I did find this Joshua in the 1841 Census, but the spelling was Thewles.
Joshua is aged 45 1796 born Yorkshire. Living Prickleton Street Almondbury Upperthong with his wife Esther 50 1791, son John 15 1826, daughter Mary 12 1829, son Tom 10 1831, father John 75 1766 and Eli Sanderson 20 1821.

I did find a marriage earlier for Joshua Thewlis 15/09/1822 to Esther Sanderson at Almondbury.
Hope you are successful.

Occupation Interests / Re: Penwigg Maker?
« on: Monday 05 May 25 21:00 BST (UK)  »
Reading the posts, called to mind on lan-opc.org.uk, the marriages of the inventer of the water frame cotton spinning machine Richard Arkwright (1732-1792). He married Patience Holt in Bolton in 31/03/1755 and was described as a peruke maker.  He married Margaret Biggins in Leigh on 24/03/1761 and described as a barber from Bolton.  He also invented a commercially successful dye for wigs.  There is a great deal of information on the internet.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: Lewis Barton b1689 - My family tree.
« on: Tuesday 01 April 25 15:12 BST (UK)  »
As sometimes certain forenames regularly appear in families I thought I would go down that path. Although it is still a mystery.  I have looked on Lancashire Parish Project, Find my past and Family Search.  I found the baptisms of his children but was unable to find his birth in 1689.  If you don't mind, where did you find it?  I found the marriage to Margaret Ashurst 16/05/1714 as mentioned and also her burial 01/11/1731 wife of Lewis Barton of ?Airfield (difficult to read image) in Upholland, occupation Farmer.   I found a marriage to Mary Park 23/06/1734 at St Wilfred Standish by licence.  I found the licence image 21/06/1734, both were resident in Upholland and Lewis a Farmer.  There is the burial of Lewis 07/04/1761 at St Thomas the Martyr Upholland, abode Upholland and occupation Farmer.

I also found a baptism for Margaret Barton 01/01/1735/36 father Lewis, Airfield in Upholland, occupation Farmer. There is also a burial 15/10/1761 St Thomas Upholland for Lewis Barton son of William Barton, abode Upholland occupation Farmer.

I hope you find this of interest.

I have an ancestor whose will is dated 1803 and he died in 1807. So hopefully Lewis Burton's burial will be found.
