Ayrshire / Re: Mclauchlan to Canada/Ontario
« on: Monday 14 June 10 19:01 BST (UK)  »
Hello Heather.  I think we have talked before.  My name is Jean Styles and I am the grandaughter of John McLauchlan one of the sons of Robert Spiers.  I would very much like to resume our contact after such a long time.
I have been in touch with Margaret Brookes of Australia another great grand daughter of Robert Spiers  and also Jean McLauchlan of New Zealand.
I don't have much information on the Canada/Ontario side.
Looking forward to hearing from you again.  My email is: (*)

Regards
Jean

Is your McLauchlan ancestor connected with the Alan McLauchlan family in N.Zealand?
I have only just found your notes on Rootschat.

Yes. I am ashamed to say It is the same one. I realised yesterday that it was in the wrong place and posted it again.  I will try to cancel it.
The new version has more information as I visited the ERO last week and found the Chelmsford Chronicle with some details.

Essex Lookup Requests / Thomas Styles
« on: Monday 01 June 09 20:23 BST (UK)  »
Thomas Styles born 1793, was brought before the Essex Assizes charged with burglary at Latton.
The assizes were held at Chelmsford on 13/03/1812. Thomas was found guilty and was executed 28/03/1812.  He was nineteen.
I found this information from the Chelmsford Chronicle but have no details of the actual assizes.  What did he steal, was violence used?
The Essex Assizes are not at the Essex Record Office but at the TNA.  I am unable to get to the TNA and wonder if anyone has any ideas how I can find the details?
Thomas was my husband's direct ancestor.
Many thanks

Thomas Styles of Latton, born 1793, was convicted of Burglary in Latton, Essex and executed on the 28th March 1812. He was 19 years of age.  Thomas is buried at Theydon Garnon.  Can anyone find the court proceedings, hopefully telling me what he actually did.  The information I have is from the Chelmsford Chronicle of 1812 but is very short on details of the case.

Thanks.

This is styles05.  I have found a son of Thomas and Sarah Styles who was born in 1803.  At the age of 19 he was executed for burglary in Latton, Essex.  I have found some information in the Chelmsford Chronicle of March 1812. From this I find he was executed on 28th March 1812.  The Essex Assizes for Chelmsford are kept at TNA and I am unable to visit there.  Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can find ther details of the burglary and the trial?

Ayrshire / Re: Ayrshire farming families esp WYLLIE

Hello Ann
My Ancestors who farmed at Caddell were the McLauchlan family.  They were there until they left to come to England.  At that time, in the 1880'/1890s the agriculture in the east of England was in trouble and workers were leaving to go to the north where there were more jobs available in the mines etc.
Last year I went to Scotland to see where they came from. I have photo's of Caddell Farm and also of Girthill farm which is where my Grandmother came from. It is only about 10 minutes away.
As far as I know there is no connection with the Whyllie family but anything is possible.  The owner of Caddell Farm now found quite a lot of items connected with the McLauchlan family but alas he burnt it all as he thought it was of no value!  I could have cried!!.  He was a very nice man and we had a long chat.
Do contact me if you think we might be able to connect somewhere.  Meanwhile ghood hunting and I will look at the information I have so far.

Just as a matter of interest, my 2xgreat grandfather was farming Caddel farm in the 1851 census. The family were there until my great grandfather left in 1890 to go to England and farm there.  As far as I know there is no connection with Wyllie but maybe there is.  Regards Jean
