Surrey / Gourlay - missing in Surrey
« on: Monday 26 March 12 07:32 BST (UK)  »
I'm gradually filling in all the gaps in my Gourlay family tree but am lost with the descendants [except one] of James Tough [Jimmy] Gourlay 1909 -1967. Jimmy was born in Forfarshire , Scotland and went to Croydon, Surrey where he became a policeman and married Doreen Beauchamp in 1932.

They produced 3 sons, one of whom I know about. The other two, my second cousins, are a mystery in spite of years of research. I would appreciate anybody knowing of the Gourlays of Croydon sending me a PM.

John Gourlay, Melbourne, Australia.

I can claim a 17 year gap between children and marriage with one set of 2nd great grandparents. They were married in 1851, 2 years before his death in 1853. His death certificate records that he died from pythisis [TB] which he had for 2 years. One likes to presume that the news of his illness gave the decision to marry before it was too late.

Sharleen and SG
I am also an Australian Dewar descendent; however I can't match with any of the names Sharleen has listed even though my Dewars were also from Fife.
My 4th great grandparents were John Dewar c1742-26/12/1814 and Isobel Meiklejohn c1743-4/4/1810.
If either of you relate to them, I'd love to hear from you.

I have a 1890 born Peter Gourlay in my tree. Born Auchterhouse, Forfarshire, but no occupation known. I also have a c1891 Peter but have his occupation as a nurse. Both a suitable age.

Now I know who jenc is. Thanks Jennifer, great photograph. I have sent my email to second cousin Linda. She is yet to reply. She is a niece of 1899 Andrew.

I have corresponded with Ronald McCaffer previously and through him heard of Gordon. I presume that the ACG they refer to is Andrew Cairns Gourlay, Ronald's grandfather.

I'll pass the photograph to Linda, it may help with the identification.

Dear Jenc

My granduncle, Kirriemuir born, Andrew Bennett Gourlay 1878-1929 was a butcher as was his Forfar born son, Andrew Gourlay b1899, so maybe the latter had his own shop.

I've just sent an email to my second cousin in England who is the latter's niece referring her to this post. Maybe, she will have some information for you.

I also think it's a good idea, but too late for me now, with 40+ year old children. In my tree, my only ancestor with this practice was my late father, Alexander Meffan Gourlay. Meffan, being his mother's maiden name.
