Lancashire / Re: Samlesbury Hall paintings

It will be a pleasure. I am sure that someone at Samlesbury Hall will know something about where the information about the paintings will be kept. When I know what day I'm visiting I will let you know and you can give me any specific requests.

👍🙂

I would have thought that The Lancashire Evening Post would be the most likely choice for a local newspaper.

I live in Preston and Samlesbury Hall is not far at all. I can probably take a visit in a week or so.

I can have a chat to the staff and my 12 year old son will be thrilled to do a bit of investigation work.

The Lighter Side / Unusual Occupations
« on: Wednesday 02 October 19 22:22 BST (UK)  »
"Generally useful" was recorded as the occupation, in a census record, for the 20 year old daughter. 😂

Just wondering what other unusual or odd occupations people have come across?

Westmorland Lookup Requests / Re: Hugill help please (JACKSON)

I'm new to this site and geneology so I'm finding my way around by looking at other people's posts and found yours interesting because I'm from Lancashire and know a little about its history.

I too confine my research to what's online and free.

I recognised the place Ings because its on our route to the Lake District. I also felt that if Strickland, Cumberland was stated on an official register then its more likely to exist than not.

I think if you take a look at The Old Cumbria Gazetteer online you can find a wealth of information about all of the places you've mentioned, including Strickland (great or little), Ings, Goose Howe and several bobin Mills around your area of interest.

It's not beyond possibility that there maybe records of employees at the Mills or in their workers cottages.

If you know your ancestors religion then this will greatly narrow down your search.

People generally get buried at their families church and in Cumbria people carried their dead up and down mountain and across stream to their place of burial. Hence the prevelance of stepping stones across streams in Cumbria.

As an aside, but interesting is that when William Wordsworth lived at Dove Cottage his landlord lived at Tail End

I think that you have Emily and her second husband in the same grave and their oldest son in the other.

It maybe that Emily's first husband was the biological father but he was named for Emily's second husband and he was raised as such.

In 1939 I would guess that one of these Logan men had signed up and was away to war, the other at home with Emily.

The person who died first would have been in their 80's at the time of the second's death.

As the two men share the same name its likely that the younger one would be referred to as Harry?

Just pitching in because I'm a newbie and trying to find my way around.

Longton is a small village about 2 miles from where I live. More than happy to do a visit if required. 👍

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: BRYNING'S YARD
« on: Saturday 14 September 19 09:24 BST (UK)  »
Newbie here but as Preston is my home town and I had never heard of Brynings Yard, so I couldn't help being interested.

Brynings yard = Bamber’s Yard.

Anyone from the area will know of Bamber Bridge which is on the outskirts of Preston and the main street which runs through Bamber Bridge is called Gregson Lane.

I'm guessing that the surnames of Bamber and Gregson were prominent families of Preston.

There is a news story on the history of Bamber’s Yard at www.blogpreston.co.uk but I haven't figured out how to attach yet.
