Hello my surname is girlow and I found out that my grandfather had the same name when he joined the army in ireland age 18 Y's he did about 3 years and the got sent to prison, when he came out he changed his surname to girling his full name was Walter Samuel girling from norfolk born 1878 died 1940 maybe there could be a connection from both our sides. 
to start with my garand father was called walter samuel girlow got married in 1911 suffolk he was born in 1875 suffolk.died 1940 sorry got the dates wrong befor. i am trying to find his parents
he married annie coyle from ireland he must have chandged his surname back to girlow.
he had been in the army twice first time with girlow the after comming out of prision he joined up again and sued hi name girlow because he did not want the army to know about his prision service.
