The Lighter Side / Re: Employee of The Times, London 1864
« on: Tuesday 15 July 25 01:10 BST (UK)  »
I have just sent The Times an email regarding this.
The 1861 census just has my ancestor as a printer, employer not mentioned.
I found a short article in a newspaper from 1864, giving his name and that he was a printer at The Times, Printing House Square. This was about his fathering a child (he was already married with a couple of children) but didn't reveal his age or any other details that I could check.
Thanks, I shall keep looking
Jackie

Does anyone know of a site that would deal with the above?
I have looked at the newspaper's website and there is nothing that I can see that relates to the above. It is possible that one of my ggg uncles was a printer there at that time.

The Common Room / Re: General question

I managed to contact a 4th cousin (by mail) by using an address that I found in the whitepages. I was lucky in that they had an unusual surname and that there was only one entry.
I have tried to contact other relations through various family history sites but quite often I don't get any response.
Good luck with your search.

Welcome to Rootshcat.
Rootschatters are a helpful bunch and are willing to help with advice.
I hope that you are not relying on the dna kit to answer your questions. The paper trail is important as it gives you names and dates etc.
Good luck with your search.

PS I took a dna test to see if it could help with some brickwalls - it didn't; so I got my children to do one, but the brickwalls are still standing.

Sent mine off yesterday.
You would not call my day exciting but they are interested in what people did on a certain day; doesn't matter if we consider it boring.

I have started to make my notes for today; making a rough timeline and notes as the day happens. Then I will work from that to prepare my diary for the day, not forgetting the copyright clause.

Less than a week to go.
I start to think about what I will include in this year's submission about this time - references to past and future events which are relevant.

Oops! Getting ahead of myself.
Definitely Mass Observation Day 2025.
Sorry

The Lighter Side / Mass Observation Day 2026

I would like to know just where time goes. Seems like Easter was yesterday, and Christmas a month before that!
Back to the subject.
Mass Observation Day is Monday 12 May and it is not a chore to keep a diary for that day. By submitting it to the relevant address, it would help build up a picture of everyday lives.
So, flex those fingers in readiness.
