The Lighter Side / Re: Billy Martin, comedian, of Coventry
« on: Thursday 11 September 25 21:04 BST (UK)  »
Thank you for that information; I had made the connection through the phrase in the article ' Hazlewood House, 143 Foleshill Road' which came up in the 1911 Census for James Hazlewood, Cycle manufacturer. RG14PN18543 RG78PN1111 RD390SD2 ED5SN202.
So, Billy Martin aka William Hazlewood or Martin William Hazlewood was the great grandson of James Hazlewood. Now, we have a comedian in the family!

I am hoping that someone may be able to help with some biographical information on the above.
Billy Martin was apparently the stage name of a William Hazlewood around 1960; working mainly in the Coventry area I believe and he said in a newspaper article in the Coventry Evening Telegraph of 18/1/1963 that he was the grandson of James Hazlewood of the Hazlewood Cycle Co.
Trouble is this doesn't tally with any of James' grandchildren that I have found.
Help

The Common Room / Re: Sending letters to unknown relatives
« on: Monday 18 August 25 21:22 BST (UK)  »
Hello
I have written to unknown relatives, by mail, and got replies from most of them whereas when I have contacted them through family history sites, I have got few responses.
I start by writing a draft letter stating who I am, why I am contacting them and how I think we are related. I include several questions without going into too much detail. After several days, I refine the letter and send it off.
I have been lucky in the replies as sometimes the connection has been tenuous. I haven't included a stamped addressed envelope to date but I did consider it.
Nothing ventured is nothing gained.
Good luck with your research.

The Lighter Side / Re: Finders International

Well, still going on but we have moved up the chain so to speak.
My cousin contacted Finders to check progress and was told that it is now in the hands of the solicitors but we aren't holding our breath. I have managed to collect a bit more information about the deceased and her husband's family and now have a dedicated file for this topic and our benefactrix.
Maybe by Christmas?

The Lighter Side / Re: Employee of The Times, London 1864

I have just sent The Times an email regarding this.
The 1861 census just has my ancestor as a printer, employer not mentioned.
I found a short article in a newspaper from 1864, giving his name and that he was a printer at The Times, Printing House Square. This was about his fathering a child (he was already married with a couple of children) but didn't reveal his age or any other details that I could check.
Thanks, I shall keep looking

Does anyone know of a site that would deal with the above?
I have looked at the newspaper's website and there is nothing that I can see that relates to the above. It is possible that one of my ggg uncles was a printer there at that time.

The Common Room / Re: General question
« on: Wednesday 25 June 25 02:24 BST (UK)  »
I managed to contact a 4th cousin (by mail) by using an address that I found in the whitepages. I was lucky in that they had an unusual surname and that there was only one entry.
I have tried to contact other relations through various family history sites but quite often I don't get any response.
Good luck with your search.

Welcome to Rootshcat.
Rootschatters are a helpful bunch and are willing to help with advice.
I hope that you are not relying on the dna kit to answer your questions. The paper trail is important as it gives you names and dates etc.
Good luck with your search.

PS I took a dna test to see if it could help with some brickwalls - it didn't; so I got my children to do one, but the brickwalls are still standing.

Sent mine off yesterday.
You would not call my day exciting but they are interested in what people did on a certain day; doesn't matter if we consider it boring.
