Wiltshire / Wills held by Wiltshire and Swindon Archive
« on: Monday 02 June 08 03:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

Can anyone explain why Wiltshire and Swindon Archive hold wills and other documents relating to people who lived out of the area?? ??? ???

For example, W&SA, hold an Inventory, tuition bond, will from 1590 of William Bullock, Gentleman of Arborfield........Inventory from 1596 of Thomas Bullock, Esquire, Arborfield........Administration bond, inventory, will of 1606 of Gilbert Bullock, Gentleman of Arborfield.

Arborfield is a few miles to the south of Reading in Berkshire.

Cheers,

Carol

Hi WendyH,

At long, long last I've got around to replying.  :-[ :-[ :-[

These are all the Yatesbury wills held in the Wiltshire & Swindon Archives,
http://history.wiltshire.gov.uk/heritage/wills_search.php?community_in=Yatesbury.

The wills of Robert, John and Judith BULLOCK are there.

Haven't got around to ordering copies, yet.

Once again, my sincerest apologies for the very long delay.

Hi Octavia,

Have a look at this;
http://www.institutions.org.uk/workhouses/england/wilts/highworth_workhouse.htm.

Until the Stratton St. Margaret Workhouse was finally demolished around 10-15 years ago, it was a hospital for the elderly. It was situated adjacent to the Stratton Fire Station on the eastern side of the town.

Hope that's of help.

Hi Guys,

Just a line to thank you for the information you've posted on this thread.

Unfortunately, I've been offline for almost two months due to family illness and bereavement.

My Dad, sadly, but with great courage, passed away on Tuesday, May 27th after a short illness.  :'( :'(

As you will no doubt understand, I haven't felt much like going on-line, added to which I just haven't had any spare time.

In the coming weeks I will take the time to read, and, hopefully, track down the information you have SO kindly provided.

Rest assured, I'll have more questions to pose which, given my family tree, so far, will, probably not, have any easy answers.  :-[ :-[

Until then, take care and 'thank you'.

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to thank all of you who have contributed my request for help tracing Ann(e) POTTER.

I should, and would, have replied before now; but, I've had a horrendous two months and just haven't had the time or inclination to venture on-line.

My uncle, my Mum's brother, sadly, passed away in early April.  :(

This was followed, just a few days later, with my Dad being admitted to hospital with pneumonia. He was allowed home after five days but was re-admitted within a fortnight.

My Dad, passed away, peacefully, after a five week fight, on May 27th.  :'( :'(

You've given me a huge amount of information to digest over the forthcoming weeks, and I, sincerely, thank you.

No doubt I'll be back 'pestering' you all for further details in the not too distant future.

Until then, thank you, once again, and take care.

Carol

A very tangled web!!  :o :o

But, the further back I go the more used to them I'm becoming!!

Tricia, you've been brilliant!! I'm really grateful for all your help. I can now email my 90 year old uncle and give him a few more details; he'll be stunned but not that stunned, I hope!!  :P
As I said it all started with a funeral............... ;)

Cheers, for now,

Carol

Hi Tricia,

Many thanks.  ;D ;D ;D

Didn't have her mother's christian name, just Ann Potter in the workhouse!!

If you could post Rachael's married name, even more  ;D ;D ;D ;D!!

All this because of a family funeral earlier today.  ::)
Trail had gone cold until then, so I'd been concentrating on my maternal grandmother's side. This is my maternal grandfather's side and it's been "quite" challenging, to say the least!!

Many, many thanks for your help; it's much appreciated.

Kindest regards,

Carol

Wiltshire Lookup Requests / POTTER 1850 Westbury Workhouse look up request, please
« on: Tuesday 15 April 08 22:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I "think" I've just found my great grandmother, Ann Potter.

My previous information has her born at Tinhead near Bratton, near Westbury.
However, new, but albeit vague, information gives her birth at the local poor/workhouse.
Date of birth is around 1850; she died in 1941 aged 90.

Any information to put me on the right path, gratefully received.

Sincerest thanks, in advance.

Carol
