Armed Forces / Royal Artillery India 1920
« on: Wednesday 20 April 16 15:06 BST (UK)  »
I have just received the service records for my great grandfather. According to these he served in the 58th Battery and the 24th Brigade of the Royal Artillery between 1920 and 1924 and was stationed in Rawalpindi. According to a user on another forum, those stationed at Rawalpindi during this period were either engaged in one of the Waziristan campaigns (either 1919-21 or 1921-24) or the Mahsud campaign (1919-20). However, according to the service records he was not engaged in a campaign, nor did he receive a medal. Could this have been accidental/an oversight? Were the 58th Battery involved in any of these campaigns?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks!

Tom

Thanks for that info pandk2.

Henry David Butters was my great, great grandfather. My grandmother tells me that he used to lie about his age and his wife didn't find out his true age until his death in 1953. She thought he was born in 1879, but according to family stories and his birth certificate he was born in 1871 in India. On his entry on the 1939 census his birth year of 1871 is actually crossed out and replaced with 1879.

Additionally, I had always thought of James David Butters as being born in 1838. However, I visited the National Archives at Kew last month and searched the Muster Rolls for the 33rd Regiment of Foot. I located James' entry. It gave his enlistment date as 30 January 1858 and also said that his age at enlistment was 22, this would put his birth at somewhere between January 1835 and January 1836.

I don't see anything in the Army discharge records on FindMyPast so presumably he did not go on to pension.

Muster rolls may be the best way to proceed http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r?id=C14223&_ser=WO+12&_q=33rd&name=Search

Thanks Shaun!

At long last, I managed to get down to the National Archives to view the Muster rolls for 33rd Foot.

I found that James Butters enlisted with the 33rd Foot on 30th January 1858. Just in time to join up with Sir Hugh Rose's Central India Field Force during the Indian Mutiny, during which the 33rd Foot protected the Field Force's flanks.

This could be him in 1861

James Butters number 172 Private 33rd Foot ( Duke of Wellingtons Regt ); stationed at Deesa.

Oooh, thank you, that may well be him as on his marriage certificate he gave his name simply as James Butters, rather than James David.

Thanks for your reply also ShaunJ! I will have to look through the muster rolls I guess.

Many thanks to both of you for your help.

May I Ask where you were able to find this information as I've had trouble finding anything on him?

Many thanks

Tom

Hello all

I am trying to find information on my 3x Great grandfather, James David Butters.

He was born on 20 September 1838 in Middlesex and was still living there in 1851. However, the next information I have on him comes from his marriage certificate in 1862, which took place in Colaba, India, in which he is listed as a Corporal within 'Her Majesty's 33rd Regiment'.

In 1870, he remarried and was now working as a Station Master in India.

I am particularly trying to find information on his military career though as other than this reference in his marriage certificate, I can find no other information on him. I have a memory of him serving as a Private within the same regiment, but can find no source for this.

Any help would be hugely appreciated.

Many thanks

Tom

I think I may have just found her on the 1911 census:

Henry Davies - 31 - coal miner
Mary Elizabeth - 28
Lettie - 7
Irene - 5
Edward John - 4

I know they had a daughter called Irene based on the fact that in her marriage certificate to my great grandfather her birthday is stated as being 1905 and her father as Henry Davies (coal miner).

I think I will have to go along with the census that you found as it is the closest to being her as I can find.

Thank you so much for your help, it is much appreciated!

There will only be 1911 census that she could be in. And unfortunately look ups for that one are not allowed.

Have you got her birth cert to give both parents names and her mothers maiden name?
If you havent, then it will be hard to narrow down which one in the birth indexes is her, to enable you to get it, as there are several of that name in that year in Wales.

Pm on its way with a likely family!

Of course! Where are my brains this morning? She could have only been in the 1911 census. I think I meant I can't find her family on any other censuses.
