At this point I am fairly sure that John O'Burney Kelly is my 3x GGF. My GGM was Clarice Edna Kelly, whose father I thought was Herbert Hercules but seems to be spelt Hubert instead, who was married to Mary Anne Matilda Rose Betts.

With this info about Hubert's birth and death I've found his marriage to Mary Betts and the registration of Clarice's birth.

Thanks for all this help, it's so much more than I've had in a long time.

I came across the death on Ancestry.com in their Australian Death Index. I haven't been able to find it anywhere else.

Hi guys. I'm looking for any info about a man named John O'Burney Kelly who I think may be my 3x Great Grandfather. His name came up on a death notice of his son Herbert Hercules Kelly in 1915. Herbert's mother was also mentioned as Katherine Mary Smith. I am thinking that he might be Irish as a DNA test has shown that I have a lot of Irish ancestry but I haven't come across it on my maternal side. Unfortunately, that is all of the info I currently have and anything extra would be greatly appreciated.

It was actually Ruby Mary's father that I was sure about. There is no mention of Frederick in Ruby's bible, just her mother and husband. It seems that Frederick was from England and Cecilia was Danish, meaning that if there is Maori blood the probable place would be Ruby's biological father if it was not Frederick.

I am looking for my great grandmother, Ruby Mary SWAIN. I haven't been able to find a record of her birth and she doesn't appear until she marries Hercules Henry Burke.

As far as I know Cecilia Margeret LiNDHOLD (Cecilie Margrethe) is her mother and Fredrick SWAIN her father. However, she may have been born during a period that Cecilia abandoned Fred but before their divorce so Ruby Mary may not be the daughter of Fred. As Cecilia was still married and still had the SWAIN name, this could be the reason Ruby Mary took that name.

The information I have for Ruby Mary SWAIN:
Born: 21 Nov 1891, New South Wales, Australia
Died: 21 May 1972, Burwood NSW, Australia
Married: 27 Nov 1912 to Hercules Henry Burke
Mother: Cecilia Margaret Lindhold
Father: Fredrick Swain

As some of you have probably realised by now that one of my aunties has been researching the family as well. As there is no mention of Ruby Mary SWAIN being a child of Cecilia and Frederick, she thinks that perhaps she was born in the period after Cecilia left Frederick but before their divorce, therefore taking her mother's name at the time.

My grandmother always believed that she had Maori blood in her. Maybe this is where is came from if she did.

It looks like Cecilie was with a few different men in her time, so she may have married again after her divorce with Frederick in 1907... Possibly more than once.

I don't have any other documentation linking Cecilie and Ruby to one another. At the moment it is purely what I have been told. Unfortunately, I didn't get the chance to talk to my grandmother (Ruby Mary's daughter) before she passed away last year.

"Frederick Swain" should have been Hercules Henry Burke as it was her husband's death date and not her father's.
