I have just come across this thread!! Here are some notes from my research:
"Thomas Kirkwood was born about 1792. It is not known if he was actually born in Ireland or somewhere else, possibly Scotland. He was a Farmer who owned a large property about 3 miles from Belfast on the Falls Road, Andersontown, Ballymurphy. The property was named Roseland and the area is now a housing estate. Thomas was a community minded man who believed in a good education for his children and was an esteemed member of the Malone Presbyterian church. He married Mary Ann MacLean, who was born about 1797. They had eight children. Thomas died at Roseland on the 5th of October, 1880 and Mary Ann died on the 17th of March, 1878. They are both buried in the City Cemetery in Belfast with their son Hugh and several other family members."
Hugh's brother Thomas Alexander Kirkwood was my Grandfather (c. 1838 - 1896) He married Mary Shaw (09/08/1860) and died 22/10/1896. They had about 12 children, the youngest being my father Victor Shaw Kirkwood who came to Australia in 1911 after about 6 years in South Africa. He married my mother Catherine Agnes Higgins 29/11/1917. They had six children. I am the youngest, born 1935!! There are many descendants in Australia, mostly in the Sydney area.
