A big Thank you to everyone that responded to my post, I have made a request for someone to view the Probate record on my behalf, as that was somthing new to me.  I didn't think there was a record for this at all.    You have certainly all given me some new leads and information to assist in my search.   I appreciate all of your efforts.

To crisane,  he definately did not marry Jemima in NZ as I have checked for this...   I haven't checked in UK for a marriage for him.

To Lucy2, I didn't realise that a duplicate entry was possible.....  that certainly gives me somthing to think about.
The physical description given for the Merchant navy seaman - describes Abrahams son (and my father) for that matter, so it could be a good lead.
Thank you so much for this info.

New Zealand Completed Requests / TOOVEY vs TOOVEY

I am currently researching Abraham Toovey, sometimes known as Jack or John.

The facts I know about him to date are :

Born c 1831  Wickham, Hampshire, England

20.2.1875  Charged with breach of peace in Thames NZ
                 Theft charge - dropped
6.4.1875    Toovey was shot at by Thomas H. Edwards in Kauaeranga, Thames
he was only injured.   Was working as a bushman.
c 1875       Went to Warkworth and worked as Orchardist/Farmer/Gum digger

I have checked UK Census for 1841 and find that there are two Abraham Tooveys born about the same time, so it is difficult to work out which one is the right one...

UK Census 1841
Parents:  Abraham and Lydia Toovey
Child:     Abraham Toovey aged 11 years

UK Census 1841
Abraham Toovey aged 12 years working as a servant for John & Rhode Taylor

How can I track Toovey entering NZ etc.... to try and prove which Abraham Toovey is the correct one?

He never married in NZ so the dates/places for his birth have been gleaned from his childrens birth certificates.

Does anyone have any link to John Toovey who was a NZ Forest Ranger / Armed Constabulary during the Waikato wars ?
A John Toovey was interviewed c 1900 about his time as a NZFR, I would like to also confirm whether this Toovey is related to my family or whether I can rule him out definately.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello, I see this post was added sometime ago, but I would love to get in contact with member pompeygirl1 in relation to this information and especially about dodgy ole Abraham Toovey.

I have a great great grandfather Abraham Toovey (aka Jack or John) and all that I know about him is that he was born c 1831 in Wickham, Hampshire, England.  As he did not legally marry in NZ it is very difficult to trace any other information on him.  Deeply mysterious bloke!

All that I can tell you is that he was in Thames NZ about 20 Feb 1875 as that is when he was charged with fighting in the street, a short time later he is charged with stealing but the charge was dropped and then he was shot at in April 1875.   Don't worry he survived as the wounds were in his lower leg.    But he did steal away Mr Edwards wife and they moved to a small town called Warkworth taking the younger children and having another three children of their own.

He worked as a bushman, gum digger, orchardist and farmer in NZ.

With the vague details I do have and checking the census records for the UK I did find two people born about the same time in Hampshire with the same name.

So I couldnt differentiate between :
UK 1841 Census
Parents Abraham and Lydia Toovey
Child:  Abraham  age 11 years

UK 1841 Census
Child: Abraham Toovey 12 years
Working as a servant for John Taylor & Rhode Taylor

I did feel that the first one was more likely only because the childrens names given were repeated later in our family  i.e.  Abraham, Alfred, Matilda, Lora

Does this sound like your guy?

I look forward to hearing from you  ;)
