World War Two / Re: Help understanding Convoy Numbers for Royal Navy

Thank you for the information. My Dad couldn't remember the name of the ships. Apparently he sailed in several ships from the time he was taken prisoner in the desert in July 1942 to Liverpool sometimes in late September or October1942. Also, assuming I were able to narrow it down to  a few ships, are there lists of the passengers/prisoners on board? Thanks.

Good afternoon. I have a similar question. My Dad was a WW 2 prisoner of war, who was transported from North Africa in 1942 to Liverpool. It would have been in September or October 1942. I'm trying to find information on the convoy he might have been in. Thanks much.

Another question I have is do you know where I would find records of the ship convoys that transported prisoners of war from North Africa to the UK in 1942? Perhaps ship manifests are available. The ship travelled from North Africa to Liverpool. Thanks.

Matt, thank you much. I'm ordering copies of the records. Again thanks for the reference.

Thanks for the responses. If I could get a hold of directories, it would give me a way to narrow the search by a process of elimination. Not sure what is available on-line. Thanks much.

chempat,  since you couldn't find a Graves in the telephone directories in ancestry for Bassingham around the war years, could it be under Greaves?

Keyboard86, sorry for barging in, but I have a related question. Would you know where I could find passenger list of British ship sailing from North Africa to Liverpool transporting WW2 prisoners of war? Thank much.

Brian, thank you for the information. I visited the Rectory in Bassingham, but I was not able to find any information, pictures, etc., about the camp, the prisoners held there, etc. My Dad was there for at least 3 years and worked on local farms and spoke highly of his time there. One of the farmers he worked for was a Mr. Graves or Greaves, not sure which is correct, but have been unsuccessful in finding out anything about that either. Again, thanks for the info and if you can point me in the right direction, it would be much appreciated.

Mr. Graves or Greaves or Grieves was a tenant farmer in the area. In addition to owning his own farm, he also was, as was common during the war, a tenant farmer on other land. I was able to establish, through an individual living in the area, that one of the farms was nearby Bassingham close to Disney Norton. The property was apparently owned by the Haywoods. The property has been sold, but for a time it was a B&B named The River Farm House.

The two individuals I met in Bassingham, were not able to shed any light on the name or whereabouts of the Graves family. Thanks.
