Hi Biggles, I have Ancestry and have been looking at both Roots Magic and Family Historian for off line work. At the moment I am leaning towards roots.  So it was good to read your helpful comments.  I think ultimately it will be buy and see how it goes. Thanks

It appears FamilySearch closed it down in2013 but still allowed it  to be used by persons who ran it before that date, but thanks for posting.

Looking to run a software programme totally disconnected and private from the net. Thoughts appreciated on suitable new/used programme. Thanks

Confirmation of the birth date, I can not seem to find a record. Think possibly the best thing to do at this stage is leave it in abeyance and accept the baptism record everything else is slotting into place.

I never considered placing 'family' names at the top of the tree, one never knows what might pop up. Thanks for the tip and coming back so quick, Regards Ray

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Common Ancestor hints.

My ggrandfather was illegitimate, according to the person who wrote out his details. Born 1838 in the uk. So the paternal line stops. I wondered reading the above posts if by looking at the DNA results of more distant cousins if a common name might appear. My reason for posting being I have read the above posts and wondered if I could possibly be  on the right track. I find it difficult sometimes to grasp meaning [mental age problem]. Thoughts appreciated.
