Ireland / Re: Ancestor searching
« on: Tuesday 05 November 19 07:38 GMT (UK)  »
I have no more on him.His son was born in 1834, so he would have been born before then and before civil registration started.  I have no idea how many mental asylums there are
In Ireland. I know many o f them were closed in the last hundred years. So would I ever get a birth record on him?  There is no record of even his marriage.

Ireland / I am trying to find a Robert Burnett, born in an Asylum
« on: Monday 04 November 19 23:27 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find a Robert Burnett, born in an Asylum circa 1800.  No information on Mother. His son was Andrew Burnett born 1843 in Drung  Donegal married Catherine Harbison from Derry.
Robert obviously wasn't an inmate as he was born there. How do I find records of asylums anywhere in ireland, and would his birth be registered. I have tried every source and cannot find records of his birth anywhere. Hope someone can help me.

Derry (Londonderry) / Re: Campbells/Burnetts in N.I

Hi!
Nice to hear from you. You mention you have a family bible that lists members of your Family.
You may already have this information, but I will send it anyway.
My Great Grandfather was Andrew Burnett born in Drung Donegal in 1834 and died 1872. He married Catherine Harbison who was from Derry.
So these two people would be our Great Grandparents.
their children were William born 1878
                           Isabella born 1875
                           Robert Burnett born 1880
James Burnett born 1883 (your Grandfather)
                           Henry Burnett born 1872
                           Martha Burnett (My Grandmother)
                           Jane Burnett.
I know your Grandfather left Donegal and went to live in Londonderry.
My Grandmother Martha also left Donegal, Married my Grandfather and went to live in Derry too.
I do not have a lot of information on the rest of their family, but I do know that Robert their son, stayed in Drung and ran the farm.
I don't know if you have this information but, our Great Grandfather Andrew's Father was also a Robert Burnett, born -I believe in late 1700 or early 1800. in Drung. So he would be our great great Grandfather. I have no information on his wife.
Our great Grandparents Andrew and Catherine, their son Robert who married a Martha. (So many Martha's and Catherines)  are all buried in Greenbank Cemetery Drung Donegal.
My Grandmother Martha -James sister as I said married and moved to Derry.
They had six children -my Mother being one of them. My Mother married an Englishman and moved to England. I remember being taken as a very young child back to Londonderry to visit relations
and my Mother said we were going to see 'Uncle James'. I do not know if this was your Grandfather,
I was too young, but I do remember a very old man.
You say they had 12 children. I found out through this website that one or two of James children
went to America. I assume you are one of the descendants. So yes we are related -albeit distantly.
If you have any more information regarding the relatives from Drung Donegal -for example what happened to the rest of James and Martha's brothers and sisters I would be grateful.
I know that one of the brothers Henry, went to Derry and worked in the textile trade. Robert stayed and worked the farm. but William, Isabella and Jane -I have no information on.
lovely to talk to you.

Derry (Londonderry) / Re: Mackey/Harbison of Terrydoo, Limavady
« on: Monday 12 January 15 23:43 GMT (UK)  »
I have read the will of my great great grandfather James Harbison of Drumramnur Co. Londonderry, who died 11th July 1889. He had the following children. Thomas, Martha, Nancy, Jane, James, Mary, Matthew, eliza and Catherine (my Great Grandmother).
I also have the will of a James Harbison who died in 1900 in Bishop street Londonderry and I wonder if this was the son of James Senior. He himself died in 1900- not that long after James senior, which makes me wonder if I have made a mistake. He was listed as a Draper. There is also a Mary Harbison who lived at 12 Bishop street.
She is listed as a spinster and a draper on the 1901 census, and I wondered if this was James Junior's sister. There is no record of her on the 1911 census.
James senior's daughter ,My great Grandmother Catherine married and went to live in Drung Donegal, and her daughter Martha (my Grandmother) resided at number 12 Bishop Street as a dressmaker for a while until she married my Grandfather, also in the drapery business and went to live at number 11 Bishop street.
But Mary does not list Martha as a relative on the 1901 census (niece) at number 12- only as a boarder.
So again maybe this puts me on the wrong track somewhat.
But it does seem that the connection between numbers 11 and 12 Bishop street is very co-incidental.
Is there any way I can find out if James Harbison Junior of Bishop street was in fact James senior's son?
If so, then the link between numbers 11 and 12 Bishop street do fit together very well.

Would anybody know where I can find property ownership/tenancy after Griffiths valuation
1860. I am looking from 1911 up to 1956.
Thank you.

So she DID die in Londonderry.
I wonder why they told me she hadn't. The recrods based in Belfast said they had searched all dates from 1914 to 1956 to when James Wilson foster (her husband) died.
Can I find her will anywhere?
I want to thank you for all the information you have given me. This was puzzling me that I couldn't find
anything for her.

Greenbank Presbyterian church.
The search came up with Greenbank County Donegal Graveyards.
I scrolled down to the B's and Found four Burnetts.
Martha was there but buried under the name of Burnett, her maiden name, not her married name of Foster. I assumed this was my Grandmother as the three other names fitted.
She was born in 1855 I believe and died in Londonderry in 1924-26. The N. Ireland records office
could find no record of her death. They suggested I try Donegal, where she was born as she may have died there.
No record of her death there either. And I know she didn't die abroad.
I then emailed info [-- at --] kabristan.org.uk. and they told me Martha Burnett nee Foster was not my relative in that particular (I am assuming it was a grave) but I don't know.
The whole family I have found under the B's all came from Drung (Redcastle) Donegal.
I realise I was probably clutching at straws, as there were probably many different churches, there
and it was just a co-incidence that the four I found there were my relatives.
But I am sure you are right, that it is very unusual for a woman to be buried under her Maiden name.
Thank you for trying for me anyway.
