Hi Ev

Thank you for your further information. I looked up Sorn on Google and Genuki and there was a cotton mill there and coal mining too, so John must have worked in the area. N.B. More research to be done here. If this is my John I wonder how he could have progessed from Vagrant's son to Engine Keeper. No one has been able to find the "boys" on the 1861 census and someone suggested they returned to Ireland after their real mother died. I also couldn't find Margaret Williamson's death, up till now.

Yes Jane Marshall was my gtx2 grandmother and her family are VERY INTERESTING. I think I have found her parents wedding in Family Search on 23 December 1826 in Kilmaurs.  Her parents were Alexander Marshall and Jean/Jane Marshall (nee Caldwell). There appears to be a Marshall clan in Kilmaurs and apparently were well known as the "Horners of Kilmaurs" according to Andrew McCormick. I would love to find out if they go back to Billy Marshall King of the Tinkers!

I have had such a lot of help from people on this site for which I am really grateful.

Keep up the good work all of you.

Judy

You not have found them in the 1911 census cause they were no in this country. Have you tried the poor house records, They may have been in the workhouse there for would not be listed at a house address as one family but with a group of people of different surnames.

I narrowed it down by looking at census and mothers maiden names, In Scotland it is custom to add the mothers maiden name to the childs name, as a middle name, Also back then many farming people
.had the first child out of marriage. There are 2 Isabella's born in a five yr period not far apart.
Isabella Cadger Ogston was also married to a Gordon.I am still looking at this one, trying to confirm this. my email is * if you would like to contact me via that,

I have been looking at this line for 10 yrs and it took time to narrow down .

I have narrowed it down and have gone with the following, Joseph Cadger and Ann Scott, as her parents It is the only line that seems to fit for now,  Josephs parents are James Cadger and Isabella/Isabel Beedy, Anns are John Scott and Isabel Walker, The Cadger line hales from Strichen/ Memsie which is just 10 mins by car from me, I have found them at a place called Bodychelle, it was a farm with 3 or 4 properties on it and the Pittendreighs lived there also.
Hope this helps,

Hi
I am not saying that the NCO William Ashwood would have had the 3 medals. Just that it is possible that he did. Hope this clarify the above.

There was a private and a L/Cpl with the same name one the private was recorded as mpd. have the WO record for this.

the 1914-15 star was awarded for all theaters of war between 5 Aug 1914- 31 Dec 1915. Also for service in France and Belgum between the 23 Nov 1914-31 Dec 1915. National archive info.

the C/pl Ashwood reg number 40803 enlisted on 21 10 1914. discharged 5 2 1919 age 21 no fraction after it. That means he was within a month of him becoming 21. My grandfather was born 5 2 1897 Glasgow and was injured in the war.

Hi

My grandfather was William Ashwood who serve in WW1 in the KOSB's born Glasgow 1897. He served in France and was a L/cpl. He left my grandmother after their 2 son's died, my line is via his daughter Florence. He went back to live in Berwick. Where he went on to have another family. My grandfather had a bad shoulder,
William Ashwoood who regimental number was 17533 was reported missing presumed dead on 25/9/1916. France. He was a KOSB.
L/Cpl William Ashwood 40803 was awarded the Victory Medal and the British war medal also having served in 1914-1915 he would have received the star.

My Grandfather was known to have changed his date of birth a few times.

would love to hear from you.
