US Lookup Requests / Re: Ellen TOOMEY/TWOMEY-Philadelphia
« on: Sunday 31 December 17 06:21 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks, aghadowey.

On the son's 1857 birth record Ellen is the informant although her given name is recorded as Margaret and her birthplace is recorded as Philadelphia, USA.

On her 1872 death record the informant is her husband John Grimes and the birthplace is recorded as just Philadelphia.

The only suggestion I have seen that the birthplace is Philadelphia (which I think would have been in County Durham at the time) in England comes from Rizdoe Harajukihama who has not provided any supporting evidence.

Ellen was born in Phillidelphia, England.(not america)

I have now obtained passenger and migration records for the Boadicea from the Tasmanian Archives.

Ellen is recorded on the official documents as being Irish.

It appears from these records that the references to her birthplace being Philadelphia on her son's birth record and her death record are apocryphal and in the absence of any other confirmation that the determination that this would be Philadelphia in England is just speculation.

Renfrewshire / Elizabeth Gibson born 1824-advice on Paisley parish records
« on: Wednesday 20 April 16 04:11 BST (UK)  »
I'm attempting to locate the birth/baptism of my ancestor Elizabeth GIBSON from Paisley.

She emigrated to Australia onboard the Manilus , leaving Scotland from Greenock on 21 October 1841 arriving in Australia in Feb. 1842. She is listed as 19 years old and a Protestant from Paisley, which would make her year of birth approx. 1821-1822.

She was married in 1853 to one Thomas LEECH. On this certificate she gives her age as 29, which would suggest a birth date around 1824. On the other hand, her death certificate suggests a birth date around 1814; however, the informant was her son-in- law so I believe this to be inaccurate.

I have searched scotlandspeople.gov.uk for the period 1814-1825 without much success and was wondering how comprehensive the online parish records for Paisley where?

Her parents were John GIBSON and Elizabeth GILMOUR, both of Paisley. This information was obtained from her marriage certificate.  I have located their Banns and marriage dates, 14 Nov and 4 Dec. 1818. The Banns seem to have been read at the Abbey while the marriage was conducted at the High Church.

John GIBSON'S death certificate in 1881 from New South Wales Australia also confirms the name of his wife Elizabeth GILMOUR, and suggests that he was born in approx. 1797. His parents are listed as Andrew GIBSON and Janet PARK. A search of scotlandspeople confirmed that he was born 8 Nov. 1797 and baptised 12 Nov. 1797 at Paisley High Church.

Elizabeth GILMOUR appears to have been baptised 7 Jan.1798 in Paisley with her parents  as Robert GILMOUR and Janet BROWN.

Any advice on the Paisley records would be appreciated

Thanks

Hi
thanks for the information
I thought the USA was incorrect. it appears on the birth certificate of her son Edward as USA but just as the place-name on her death certificate.
What is the source of your information? Did you locate a baptismal record for her?
I haven't been able to locate a marriage record for Ellen and John in Tasmania. Have you had any luck with that?
I'm descended from their eldest daughter, Elizabeth. Which child are you descended from?
Best wishes
Lisa

Cheshire / Re: Isabella and Sarah Bind/Bund, 1853-1856

Sorry chempat. I should have linked this post to another regarding the reading of the surname, which rosie99 has done for me.

Thanks to everyone for looking at the writing.
To Geoff-E we did look at that Isabella Bend, but discounted her due to the age of Peter, who would have been about 80 in 1843. Although, if all else fails I may apply for the certificate.
To Bookbox, didn't think of Hind-so will follow that up with much thanks.

Thanks for the reply but both individuals do not appear in the 1841 or 1851 census, so are not connected with the household as servants.

In my ancestor's will he provides an annuity to an Isabella Bind/Bund daughter of Sarah. However, I am not certain of the surname. The will was written in 1853 and my ancestor Peter Mawdsley of Pouton cum Seacombe in Cheshire died in 1856 aged 92 . Isabella was probably a natural daughter of Peter.
I have had no luck in tracing either an Isabella or Sarah under the above surnames. I'm presuming the first letter is B, although the remaining letters are unclear. Any assistance appreciated

Cheshire / Isabella and Sarah Bind/Bund, 1853-1856

In my ancestor's will, Peter Mawdsley of Poulton cum Seacombe in Cheshire, dated 1853 he leaves an annuity to an Isabella Bind/Bund daughter of Sarah Bind/Bund. I have not been able to locate any references to an Isabella or Sarah that seem to match. Peter died in 1856 aged 92. I think Isabella may have been a natural daughter of Peter. Any assistance appreciated.
