http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article146074262

The death on the WA BDM index is
reg year 1914
district Pilbara
reg number 10

M

Thank you Matthew.

Chris, I'm not sure if there is a reason you haven't pursued this line of enquiry, but as mentioned previously you can order this death certificate here:
https://www.bdm.justice.wa.gov.au/_apps/pioneersindex/default.aspx

Australian death certificates are usually very detailed, although they do depend on a reliable informant being available.

I wonder if the connection goes further back in SA?

There are several births in Adelaide SA in 1840s to John JOHNSTON and Jane SAVAGE. Alexander 1840, John 1843, James 1846, John 1851, Mary Ann 1855.

Jane Savage JOHNSTON died in 1874, nok John JOHNSTON (husband), reg 59/158, Nairne district SA.

Do you know when Alexander JOHNSTON died and if he married?

Electoral rolls place him in Williamstown in 1954 as a coxswain with wife Margaret Joan but can't see his after that. He was in the navy reserve and served briefly in the Korean War.

Do you know when and where Margaret died?

Hi Robyn

Possible is Walter Bevis ALLEN (1901-1981), who arrived aboard Belgic in 1913 and was at Fairbridge.

He married Edith Blanche BRANSBY in 1929, they divorced in 1935. But I can't see her in the index to Fairbridge. https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/94903238

He remarried in 1940 to Hilda WHITWORTH and died in South Australia.

Robyn I think this might the right family, as I just checked and Hilda Winifred WHITWORTH was also at Fairbridge! :o She was born in 1916 and arrived in 1929. So his second wife but mostly likely 'mother' to Jean/Jeanne given the circumstances above.

Hi again Robyn

FYI there is a birth for a Jeanne B. ALLEN in Perth in 1932 (reg 2458) so ordering this certificate may tell you more if this is the right person.

(Looks to be Jeanne Bretherton ALLEN b. 16 Sep 1932, went to New York in 1950)

There are several 1887 newspaper articles about the marriage between Champion and Polly. But please know that the language used and the things discussed are quite distressing...a very shameful part of Australia's history.

Do you have the UK marriage certificate of Wm & Sophia?

The 1879 Qld death is a possibility but the death certificate may not reveal much information depending who the informant was (and they are not cheap!).

Unfortunately the cemetery record does not give a death year for little Sophie and John nor can I see a death record that fits in SA BDM. But I feel they must be connected (grave A32 for the children and A34 for Sophia).

EDIT: There is a death reg for a John Thomas JOYCE who died in Kapunda in 1860?? And no matching burial as JOYCE.
