Thanks very much for this link to what looms like a fascinating resource. I'm guessing from the name that the site is your work or at least that you are connected with it in some close way.

I see that, unusually, the site requires visitors to register simply in order to view the site - rather than to be able to post. But this approach seems reasonable, as expressed in your Terms and Conditions. I've had my own research hi-jacked and posted to public internet sites before now so I'm sympathetic to this need.

However, I don't find a corresponding "Privacy" statement about the use that will be made of these personal details and the usual arrangements for safeguarding personal data. Did I miss it?

I'm sure that there would no intention to mis-use data and I'm not casting aspersions but it's always reassuring to see this stated in black and white in these days of increasing proliferation of personal data around the internet.

Regards,

This recent information is fascinating if rather confusing.

The surname Bower was familiar to me and upon checking my wife's family tree, I find that Frank Ward's sister Ada Ward married a man called Edwin Bower in 1910 - he subsequently died in WWI (around 1917 I believe).

A quick check shows that Edwin Bower was not a brother of Edith Constance Bower but they may have been more distantly related, so I shall have to get back to some basic research on the Bower line.

Thank you to all contributors who have thrown light on this mystery.

Kyrenia,

Thanks very much for trying - it was another long shot and I'm pleased that we've covered it off.

Richard

Kyrenia,

Thanks that would be great if you have the time.

Kyrenia,

Thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to check out these records. It was a long shot but the only avenue I could think of to get a handle on William after yet another day's fruitless research recently.

Jane herself came from Salisbury, so it's not obvious to me whether William is more likely to come from there or from Southampton so thanks for offering to do the further lookups.

Regards,
Richard

Stan,

Thanks for clearing up my confusion so precisely - with your comprehensive answer.

I guess it's theoretically possible then that if Southampton is one of those archives that does provide photocopies of the actual original registers, rather than creating a written copy, then there could be something there that did not get transcribed in the quarterly returns.

But I'm not sure that it is worth a tenner to find out!

Regards,     Richard

Thanks Stan - I'd never been quite sure precisely what constituted original documents in this context. What I actually have is effectively photocopy of the certificate from the GRO not one of the old type written transcripts so I guess there's nothing further to be gained at the GRO.
But what exactly would the Local Register Office hold - would there have been two hand written original documents created on the day of the marriage - or is the GRO document a hand written copy of the Registry Office original or what?
I guess the same question would arise for civil registration documents for church weddings; are the registration of marriage documents held at the GRO and local country record office both hand written originals, where each was signed by all the parties?

Regards,
Richard

Hampshire & IOW Completed Lookup Requests / St Michael's Southampton - HOWARD Baptism
« on: Saturday 21 January 12 12:26 GMT (UK)  »
Sarah Jane Howard was baptised in St Michael's Church in Southampton on 9 July 1873 having been born on 21 June 1873. I have found the parish register entry in the new IGI online and the birth index via FreeBMD and have a copy of the birth certificate. The birth was registered by her mother Jane Howard, nee Tilley, (see posting above) and her father is recorded as William Howard a Dock Labourer.
The problem is that William apparently died shortly hereafter, so that by 22 September 1874 Jane was marrying Henry Baker in Salisbury - where they both originated. I know that this is not a case of mistaken identify since her daughter Sarah Jane, was subsequently known by the surname "Howard Baker" until her own marriage.
I can find no other definitive trace of William Howard or his death, partly because the name is so common that there are too many possibilities to choose from. I'm wondering whether the original Parish Register entry has anything in the margin or elsewhere to throw any further light on any of the above.
Would be very grateful if someone could do the lookup for me or make other suggestions for how I locate William and/or his death...

I have a copy of the certificate for the marriage of William Howard to Jane Tilley in the Register Office at Southampton on 10 May 1873. Jane claimed to be 21 but was in fact nearer to 18 and already 7 months pregnant. Her husband William Howard is recorded as a labourer aged 33. The witnesses were both neighbours of the place where they both lived at 12 West Street, Southampton.
