The Common Room / Re: Wrong info on Ancestry Trees
« on: Sunday 23 March 25 18:59 GMT (UK)  »
I have had a few over the years and a couple of tree owners did acknowledge their error and change their tree.

Others have totally ignored my polite request and evidence to support it.

An example was a great aunt who died in the 1960's. She never married. The tree owner gave her a middle name (parents, siblings etc were correct) and had her going to New Zealand and marrying and having numerous children. I couldn't convince her that she had the wrong person even when I told her I had attended the funeral.  ??? ???

Great find ruthhelen.

I have taken a look at the Ancestry burial register and not sure how it would download as there doesn't appear to be a heading on the register. Would this be acceptable to the CWGC? Not sure.

If it were me I would contact the Council as below -

email  -  bereavementservices@westdunbarton.gov.uk
Telephone - 01389 876306/01389875667
Or write to - Burial & Cremation Administration Office,
                   Crematorium and Lodge House,
                   Mountblow Road,
                   Clydebank,
                   G81 4SL

Most councils are very helpful so good luck and please keep us updated on your progress.

I found this George Smith on the 1891 Scotland Census -

George Smith age 40 born Inverallan, Inverness- shire. Others on the census are his wife Elsie age 31
son Alexander age 2 and son John C age 11 months.

George's occupation is given as Dining Room Keeper and the address is 1 Cumming Street, Forres.

Hope this helps and it is your GG Father,

You could try this  https://www.scottishindexes.com

I got Mental Health records from them recently at a cost of around £15. The lady in question was admitted to the Edinburgh Asylum in 1910. No photograph though but the records made heartbreaking reading.

The Common Room / Re: Does anyone know of any current Ancestry special offers?

Sloe Gin is correct and the price is brilliant at 60 pounds.

One thing to remember is the Scotland 1921 Census is only available at scotlandspeople and nowhere else.

This is just another money making gimmick from Ancestry.

My errors are my own and I am not paying Ancestry to "possibly" correct them. If this is anything like most of their hints I will be quids in ;D ;D

I have just had a response from the tree owner and he has confirmed a family connection. David was his wife's uncle and she knows about his unfortunate death.

The lady would be delighted to help CWGC in any way they can.

They are asking for my personal details but I would prefer to refer them direct to CWGC. Advice please, Sandra.

Hi Sandra,

I downloaded David's death certificate and it was an accidental shooting. Poor lad he was only 19.

There is a tree on Ancestry with all this information included and it would appear David had 3 sisters.
I have messaged the owner today (he was active yesterday) and hoping to get a reply soon. Will update you.
