Canada Lookup Request / Re: Noel Stubbs ETHELL - Victoria,BC
« on: Wednesday 23 October 13 17:52 BST (UK)  »
Just found this (Oct 2013).
It is probably well dated however....
Noel Stubbs Ethell married Margaret (Madge) Hutchison on 23 July 1932 in Vancouver.
Their only child, Donald Stewart Ethell ( born 23 July 1937 in Vancouver) is currently the Lt. Gov. of Alberta and represents the Queen of England in the province of Canada.
"Don" is my second cousin.
I have information to share on the Hutchison side.

Thanks for your help in my search.

I am good with John Fisher up to the time he appears in the 80th Reg. in 1877.

There are no conclusive entries as to Census records in 1891 and 1901 in Scotland, the name I am afraid is way to common. Also marriage records. Even a death search on Scotlandspeople was not conclusive.

I will take a closer look at the N.A.A.I.R.S. site as you suggest.

The Muster rolls for the 80th Regiment of Foot for the years in question are available at Kew near London, but not on line yet.

Take care.

South Africa / John Fisher
« on: Friday 10 September 10 18:46 BST (UK)  »
am searching for information on John Fisher, born Abt 1847 in Edinburgh Scotland.

He went to South Africa as a Foot Soldier in the 80th Regiment of Foot, part of the British Army.
In 1877 he was based in King Williamstown S.A. this from a letter on file, sent home to relations in Scotland.

Later, from a further letter written in 1884, by a relative of his in Scotland, stating that he had bought his way out of the Army and listed his address as "John Fisher Kimberley Waterworks Diamond Fields South Africa".

I am trying to find out what happened to John Fisher after 1884.Did he come back to Scotland or live on in South Africa?

Scotland / Re: Stoddart & Clark

Aussie Mia.
Please see below.

From LDS and Batch # C 116835.
Janet Clerk was christened on 27 Sept 1717 in Dalkeith District.

From James Henderson, her DOB was 23 September 1717.
(John Stoddart 2010).

From Scotlandspeople and the OPR record of Birth for Dalkeith, copy on file in Camrose.

"Page 34- 1717"

"  Janet Clerk-  Martine Clerk and Janet Saidlor had a daughter born Sept 23 & Baptized Sept 27th called Janet. Witnefses John Clerk and ? Simpsone."
James Henderson 2010).

From Scotlandspeople and a copy of the Burials Record for Dalkeith from 2 October 1786-Feb 28 1787, on file in Camrose.

"Dec 22 Buried Janet Clerk, sp to John Stoddart Weaver."

The information is carried under the Death Records on Scotlandspeople, but in fact the page says Burials, therefore the exact date of death for Janet is not clear.

I am directly related to John Stoddart, husband of Janet Clerk (Clerk). Also distantly to James Henderson who did some of the research on this
Sorry I do not have any more information on the Clerk side.

Take care.

Midlothian / Re: Harvieston

Roy.

I have no specific information regarding Harviston as in the House.

I have a feeling that all the people listed in the "Trades in Harvieston", did not actually live and work in the house.

It is very probable that there were a few cottages close by, where people such as perhaps "Walter Stoddart Weaver 1785" lived.
He was I believe employed at Catcune Mill quite close to the house.

The record keeping of the times lumped them all together under "Harvieston"

Certainly Peter Chisholm,  James Bell, Alexander Smith, William Smith and John Smith and others may well have lived in the "Big House".

I have other Stoddart relations from that area, some of whom were born in "Gardners Cottage" (from Scotlandspeople) in a location near Lasswade.

No doubt adjacent to a different "Big House"
What do you think?

Re Harvieston.

I am directly related to Walter Stoddart, Weaver in 1785 as listed in the 'Trades in Harvieston" page.

This through one of he (1745-? ) and his wife Jennet Stoethart's children, John Stoddart ,"Weaver at Catcune Mill", (1772-1830), born in "Lasswade" (area?) from "Scotlandspeople".

Catcune Mill  is/was close by Harvieston from old maps.

There were other earlier Stoddarts in Harvieston and area.

Walter Stoddart (Weaver), born Abt 1690 in "Dalkeith" (area?) from "Scotlandspeople" is also directly related from what I have found.

"Family Lore" said my Stoddarts were Tailors and earlier Weavers and I have found this to be correct.

I have information to share on this line and wonder if anyone has further information as to Stoddart names, dates, and trades.

The OPR Records (Births, Marriages and Deaths) for "Dalkeith" as an area are good on Scotlandspeople but there are gaps.
