I have still not had a reply from the records office about Martha Waterhouse in the workhouse, but I have had a nice lady whose sister lives near to the old workhouse email me.  She has since visited her sister and managed to get a tour round the workhouse (which is now a see merchants) and thanks to the kind people who work there letting her in, she has managed to send me some photos of the inside and outside of it. I also think I may have found Hannah Teal living in Headingley with a Joseph and Amelia Teal in the 1901 census. :D So hopefully I can now continue with my research :D

I'm from Coventry in Warwickshire where most my family on both sides seemed to have come to in the late 1800, probably for work.

As my first name is Alma I tried to log on as Al but that was taken. So as my second name is Valerie I took the Al and added it to Val. Not rocket science really.

The Lighter Side / Re: What was the saddest death in your Tree ?

How sad all these tales are.  I have only just started to research my family history, so at the moment the only one I can think of is my Gt.Gt. Grandmother Elizabeth Toghill who died at the age of 42 after just giving birth to twins, a girl who died with the mother and a boy Jesse who survived, leaving her husband Charles to bring up a family of 14 aged from 21 down to the new baby.  Luckily the older girls were able to help.  Charles died in 1908 aged 58.  My Gt. Grandmother was the 4th child in the family and outlived all the rest to die of old age in 1977 aged 97.  I sometimes wish I had a time machine to go back and see how they all coped in a small house with all those children. :'(

I found it quite by accident as I was looking for something else.  I am still new to the site, and haven't quite got the hang of the chat room   ??? But enjoy checking every day to see if some one has been able to help me or me help someone else.  :)

Hello oly

I am not sure if Hannah was a Teal or Waterhouse in 1901 as I have still to find info on when she was taken in by the Teals, and as there were no official adoption records then it will be difficult.

I have found a Martha Waterhouse of the right age in the 1891 census, but she is in the Bramley union workhouse and states she was born in Bolton Lancashire, so I don't think she is the right one as I know that Martha was born in Great Ouseburn.
I have written to North Yorkshire records to see if they can help.
Thanks for help so far,
Al.

Thanks oly
I have looked at the census and it seems a possibility.  Obviously Martha will not appear on the 1881 or the 1891 census in the manor, as she was with her grandparents in 1881 and in the workhouse in 1891.  How would I find her in the workhouse any ideas?

Have found that my Gt. Grandmother Hannah Waterhouse was born in the workhouse in Great Ouseburn on 23rd May 1891.  Her mothers name was Martha Waterhouse and it states on her birth cert. that she was a domestic servant in Hopperton.  It is said that the father was the son of her employer, hence no name on birth cert.  Hannah was then adopted and became Hannah Teal.  How do I go about finding fathers name and adoption info, as I cannot find Hannah in census?
