Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: deleted name on 1911 census

The William in 1901 could also have died and 2 more children born between 1901 and 1911.

I had hoped that even if that William was registered under a different surname he might have been baptised somewhere with 'correct' parents or just Martha but not getting anywhere.

It does not matter, I was just being side-tracked.

Thank-you

Does it read 17 children born and 6 still living - which should make 11 died?

Thank-you for that.  She could have been still married to someone else, yes.

If that child does belong to the neighbour I wonder where their surviving child was and why not with them.  Oh, well.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / deleted name on 1911 census

This is from the 1911 census and may be a child born with the mother's maiden name.  The Father died on the Titanic and the claim is the parents never married and the mother's fate was unknown.

Any guesses for first or surname, please.

The Common Room / 1939 register sub-number in household
« on: Wednesday 21 May 25 12:26 BST (UK)  »
In the 1939 register for a household in Southampton there were 16 people in residence in what is a 3/4 bedroom house.

https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=TNA%2FR39%2F2400%2F2400B%2F011&parentid=TNA%2FR39%2F2400%2F2400B%2F011%2F28

I have tried to shrinklink to Ancestry but having problems - Frank W Bale born 1909 living on Crabwood Road if you want to look him up.

The sub-numbering system in the household goes from 1- 6, then 7-12 have been altered to 16-21, then 22-25 are written.  Anyone any idea why they would have re-numbered?

Also, were they all really there or was this just an address used for them when they were working elsewhere.  The head of household was a Master Builder/Contractor and many in the household could have been working for him.

Thank-you for any input.

Monkwearmouth local history group no longer exists but it handed its records to the Sunderland Antiquarian Society.  Have you contacted them?

That would make lots of sense - Donaldson was her husband's middle name but they do not use it elsewhere, and I had overlooked that.  Will try not to go cross-eyed next time.

Good.

Thanks.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Addition to surname in 1939
« on: Monday 21 April 25 13:04 BST (UK)  »
Sophia Gertrude Jamieson, born 1864, widowed, was living at 105 Earls Court Road in 1921, 1939 and at probate.

Can anyone tell me what is the word in front of her surname in 1939 as attached, and with links?

Thank-you
