Thank you for your reply. According to Jeanne Winder Bulfin, author of 'The Bulfins of Derrinlough', Lord Mayor Patrick Bulfin was married to 'Theresa Cline Carroll, daughter of a former Lord Mayor of Dublin'. This was Sir William Carroll, not as wrongly stated in a previous post, John Carroll. He would therefore have been a brother-in-law of John Simon.

I also came across the following in Connellan family pedigree - Library Ireland - see website.

A Dr. Francis John Boxwell Quinlan married Maude Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Dr Sir William Carroll, in 1867. This could be the 'Margaret Elizabeth' referred to in your list.

As I am doing research on William Bulfin the Irish Argentine writer, your quest interests me. Bulfin is quite a rare name in Ireland and they originate mostly in Co. Offaly (formerly King's County). As other posters have shown, there is a good deal of information on the internet, genealogical as well as historical - please also google William Bulfin, writer and Sir Stanislaus Bulfin. The person you are helping is almost certainly related to them, however distantly. I have tried to fit your 'John, son of William', into what I have learned so far about the Bulfins, but without success. The name William particularly, occurs very often in the genealogy. However, I discovered the following recent death notice online: you can also check it out for yourself:

The death has occurred of Francis John (Frank) BULFIN
Corrigeen, Fivealley, Birr, Offaly
Bulfin, Corrigeen, Fivealley, Birr, Co. Offaly, August 6th,2014.

There are Bulfins still resident in Corrigeen. Perhaps you might consider writing to them? Wishing you luck.

Thank you to both who have replied. The material should be useful, though I note that Theresa Carroll is described as 'daughter of John', not William Carroll. I am still interested in knowing more about Patrick Bulfin - he seems to have emerged from relative provincial obscurity to become Lord Mayor of Dublin. Was he lucky enough to marry a daughter of Sir William, or was there more to his history? Donna Maria, I feel sure, will know more.

For Donna Maria

I was very interested to read that you are writing a biography of Sir William Carroll. I am doing research on William Bulfin, whose relative, Patrick Bulfin, married a daughter of Sir William and subsequently became Lord Mayor himself. I wonder could you help me with any details of Patrick Bulfin's marriage? Thank you and good luck with your biography.
