Bora da,

A long time since I've looked at this.

Can you clarify which will is refered to please in page 55 ...
"Just read the 1753 Will. Edward and Margaret appear to be the children of Richard Thomas. Did you notice how easy it is to read ... it was written and witnessed by Edward Richard, Schoolmaster and he is stated to be "the kin of my Grandfather x 3". I'm almost sure that, later, he became the owner of Pantyffynnon. regards, Peter."

Thanks David

Thanks, that's great.

I'll do some checking with my other wayward branches and see if they tie together.

It looks as though James married Jennet Ellston first:-
Marriage: 15 May 1733 St Chad, Poulton le Fylde, Lancashire
James Swarbrick - Carlton
Jennet Ellston - Carlton
    Notes: published and married
    Register: Marriages 1713 - 1742, Page 166, Entry 19
Source: Private Transcription at Blackpool Central Library

She then died:-
Burial: 25 May 1736 St Chad, Poulton le Fylde, Lancashire
Jennet Swarbrick - wife of James Swarbrick
    Abode: Thornton
    Register: Burials 1713 - 1741, Page 142, Entry 12

Amazing how fashionable the name Jennet was in Poulton in the early 1700s!  :D

i forgot to add: this Redman Swarbrick line descends to a Ben Swarbrick whom I have a DNA match with so it must be relevant I think.

Hi,

Many thanks indeed for looking and sending me all the info.

I took your point that it needs a bit more evidence although I've found almost nothing in Pilling which is frustrating. I too was looking into what the National Archives also found this probate which is very helpful - a pity it wasn't a will!  :D

I already have these in my tree:-

Richard Redman of Rawcliffe baptised 25 Apr 1736 at Stalmine to Rodger and Elizabeth

He married Margaret Swarbrick 20 Sep 1761 at St Michael on Wyre
*** There is a Margaret baptism 10 Feb 1739 at Poulton to James, husbandman of Thornton. I also found a William and Elizabeth both baptised 1 Mar 1746 at Poulton to James, residence Stening.

They had a son, William, baptised 24 Feb 1765 at Stalmine.

William married Jenny Bateson 8 Apr 1792 at St Michael on Wyre.

I believe Jenny was baptised 14 May 1769 at Thornton in Lonsdale to Robert and Agnes (née Walmsley). Walmsleys also crop up further down the Swarbrick-Redman tree. I believe my Batesons are from Burton in Lonsdale.

More digging to do!  :)

You've not found Margaret who would have been born 1765-1773ish as I haven't. There doesn't appear to be a Catholic recusant gap as such with the family but I think I'll stop looking for her and accept her being a daughter of John and Alice in Pilling is a good fit.

The suggestion is, from the presumed burial for John age 81 on 22 Nov 1804 at Pilling, that he should be born around 1723 but nothing found around that year. This could be a recusant gap but I found a John son of William of Upper Rawcliffe baptised 9 Mar 1728 at St Michael on Wyre. As John's first son is a William and Upper Rawcliffe is close enough I'm thinking this is likely. Would you agree?

Many thanks for the info. Yes it is all circumstantial but this helps me a lot  :)

I like William Swarbrick marrying Ann Roskell as I have DNA matches down that line but I had a different William for that marriage and couldn’t reconcile that with those matches. Making William a sister of Margaret fits well. I had assumed that Margaret and John’s first born was named after her husband and so was blind to the more usual chance that is was after her father.

I’ll do more looking at John and Alice.

Thanks again

Hello,

I've been trying to tie various disperate Swarbreck DNA matches trees together and the most problematic is my own! :D

My 5xGG Margaret Swarbreck married John Bateson 4 May 1790 at Pilling, Lancs. They had 6 children that I know of, all born in Pilling: John b1788, Robert b1789, William b1792, Thomas b1796, James b1798 and Agnes b1802. I know John Bateson's father was Robert. Their first born John was illegitimate so named after his father. I would guess their third William was named after Margaret's father but that's a guess.

The only baptism I've seen for Margaret in the mid 1760s is 7 Mar 1764 Margaret daughter of Richard of Hardhorn, baptised at Poulton Le Fylde. I don't like that it's to a Richard as that doesn't fit the usual order but???

I'd welcome any info if anyone has any please?

Regards
David

Hi Peter,

Thanks indeed! A number of pennies have dropped! ;D I couldn't reply to your PM btw.

Welsh placenames lose me and I hadn't realised before that Glanyr Afon = Glanrafon (1861 for Catherine).

I hadn't found John Brewerton 1846-1881 previously in 1871 census as Omnibus Guard, he was just missing but most of my Brewerton and Richards research I did 25 years+ ago. What's available now online is wonderful by comparison! David Owen is a witness at John and Catherine's wedding in 1868.

Funny about the Michaels...my grandad Stanley Brewerton told me when I was little that all above him were John Brewertons as far as...I found six Johns with a spurious Thomas in the middle!

I have very little on Richards really which you have discovered in much more detail than I. The postcard from Jane to John Richards Brewerton is here...

It's great to be able to join the dots, it gives much more of a sense of what the family was like. It's all so clear too how very family centric the Richards were. John Brewerton b1846's father John Brewerton b1824 dominated the Brewertons in Manchester as far as I can tell. He was fairly successful, had 8 children with his first wife, divorced her, married his cousin and had another 8 children. I get the feeling though that John Brewerton b1846 turned more to his wife's family Richards after his mother Agnes died the following year. After John Richards Brewerton died in 1904, my grandad Stanley Brewerton and his twin Cyril seemed to get no help from their grandad John Brewerton b1824 so it's good to understand now how his Richards relatives helped and gave him holidays at Glanrafon.

btw What Software do you use? Do you like it? My records started on a DOS system I wrote in 1987 then moved into Family Tree Maker v6 about 2000ish but it's not an easy system to use. I can export to GEDCOM.

Regards

David

Thanks Peter,
Yes I've quite a lot on Brewertons although I didn't realise Catherine's sister had moved to the Manchester area too...that's Mary I presume? Thomas?
I wrote to the Glanrafon Arms back in the 1980s and got some information which they kindly gathered from an old lady in the village, although it wasn't conclusive on Michael so that is good to know. :)
btw I re-read your John and James thread yesterday evening, more of it is sticking but patronymic naming is a nightmare isn't it!
Much appreciated,
David
