Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Re: Birkenhead Crematorium lookup
« on: Friday 04 July 25 17:21 BST (UK)  »
Thank you. I found it on British Newspaper Archive. I had been searching for Rawlinson, but I guess searching for "Ellen mercer" would have given a better result 🙂
I've now also found her husband's death notice and as a result established his birth date too. A very productive couple of hours!

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Birkenhead Crematorium lookup
« on: Friday 04 July 25 15:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I'm trying to find out the death and/or cremation date of Ellen Mercer Rawlinson (née Leech). I know she died in the Wirral, 3rd quarter of 1960, aged 62.
Ti also know she was cremated at Landecan (aka Birkenhead) crematorium and that records are available at Birkenhead Central library.
Would someone be able to look her up please, as I'm based the other end of the country?
Many thanks in advance,
Phil Jones

I dropped half a brick on my left little finger in about 1971 playing on the rocks around Charlie's Garden, aged 4. It cropped up in conversation at the hospital last night, where I had a cricketing injury examined.  The scar from the 5 stitches is still very visible, as is the fact that I've never been able to straighten that finger properly as an adult.
Fascinating to read the history of Mr Dockwray's cultivation - I'd always assumed it was a meaningless nickname.

Thanks Stan, I presume that record was created from the same source I was using.

Christine, that would be wonderful.  I'm in no great rush, as I've been reading about Margaret for over a month now: a fascinating tale whether she turns out to be (vaguely) related or now.

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Elsdon Parish Register - CROSIER/CROCER/CROZIER
« on: Thursday 23 April 15 16:40 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find more information about James Crosier, from Elsdon, who married my GGGG grandfather's eldest sister, Jane Noble on 24 May 1807, in Long Horsley.

I believe that he may be the son of the celebrated Margaret Crocer, who was murdered in her home (The Raw) in 1791 by William Winter. Winter's body was displayed on a gibbet after his hanging the following year.  The gibbet (Winter's Gibbet) still stands, although it is not the original.

In the book "The registers of baptisms, marriages & burials solemnized in the ancient parish church of Elsdon, in the County of Northumberland, from A. D. 1672 to A. D. 1812" ( https://archive.org/details/registersbaptis00goog ) I've found the following record:

November 31 1774 - Baptism of James, the son of Thos and Mary Crocer of the Raw

Is it possible that someone can check if this is a misreading of Margt or similar?

I have a little doubt as to whether a woman who gave birth in 1774 could be described as a woman "advanced in life" ( as she was described in the "Monthly Chronicle of North Country Lore and Legend" in 1877) in 1791?  I suppose, if she was 40 when giving birth, which was not unheard of in the 18th century, looking at other families, she would have been 57 in 1791.

Any assistance would be gratefully received, not only by me, but by the living direct descendants  of James Crozier that I am now in contact with.

Kind regard,

Phil Jones

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Re: Longbenton lookup Ralph Robson, Margaret Carr

Galium, I think you're right.  I had found the Margaret Jowsey/Thomas Carr marriage, and was about to look for his possible death when I read your message.  Many thanks, and many thanks again for going the extra mile and finding their children's baptisms, and Thomas Carr's burial.  I shall have a look at the BT to double-check, as much because it's satisfying to see one's ancestors names in the book, as it were, as anything else.

Thank you SelDen and c-Side.
I'm finding out a lot, but getting confused with an apparent change of Margaret's maiden name from Carr to Joicey/Jowcey after the first two children.  If someone's father died or was disgraced, might they start using their mother's maiden name as their own maiden name for records?  I shall dig deeper and deeper!
