I took a look at the map link the REG provided and was able to see that Colinswood Hotel and Colinswood did not yet exist in the 1938 map. In the later maps it shows the buildings ever the years changed at least 3 times. I tried posting the 1938 map in a PDF file but it errors out saying it's too big. I will try posting it as a JPG.

Stan, thanks for the map link. I took a look at the maps as much as possible without having to subscribe and was able to glean some results. There is clear evidence that buildings came and went. I think if I can get proof of building permits from the governing body it will confirm parts of the story of Colinswood Maternity Home. The maps I put into a PDF but it is too large to post. I will try reducing the size.

Gloucestershire / Re: St Raphaels, Hill End Henbury

Hello everyone. I would like to add that I too was under the care of the Sisters of Sacred Heart who had a convent and mother/child home (St. Raphaels) in Henbury (Henleaz). Letters in 1954 between the Mother Superior Sister Mary and Father Leahy, administrator for the Clifton Catholic Children Rescue Society show they were addressed to the sister at St. Raphael Convent in Henbury. However, my research has found that Sacred Heart Sisters may have taken over a property now called the Severn House (see photo below from 2018) from another sister order (probably the Sisters of Good Shepard).

So as noted elsewhere in this thread, they may have had two homes for mothers and children. I think JonOfWilts post about the sisters having multiple properties is right on. Coupled with with my research the convent, the maternity home and a school were located in Henbury at the corner of Brecon Road and Cardigan Road. The complex can be found at and is located near the Sacred Heart Church and St. Agatha School. You can Google the address and take a good look from Google's Street View. Check this link:

The other property was at Severn House, Ison Hill Rd, Henbury, Bristol BS10 7XA, UK. It is now a multi-rental property. You can Google the address and take a good look from Google's Street View.

The sister organizations would have operated independently but with permission and oversight from the Clifton Diocese and the regional government. Those are my next doors to knock for archival documents and possibly photos.

Since links sometimes go bad or are not maintained I recommend getting map coordinates since those do not change:

Colinswood House
Collinswood Rd, Farnham Common, Slough SL2 3LN, UK

Carol, do you have a scanned version of the photo of the Colinswood Maternity House? I can't read the text at the bottom of the photo you posted and assume it is the Colinswood Maternity House. Is it? Any idea of the year the photo was taken and its source? I would like to show it to my mother who is now in her 80s. Thanks.

Just after posting this I see you had replied awhile back. So 1936. Do you have the source of the photo?

Is it possible to get the photo scanned so it is at a higher resolution? Thanks.

Thank you posting the only picture I have seen thus far of the Colinswood Maternity Facility. It looks like a quaint setting. The darn trees/bushes block most of the view. Maybe there are others photos. I couldn't make out the writing on the bottom as I was hoping the source might lead to more photos.

Buckinghamshire / Re: Colinswood, Farnham Common ? maternity home

I recently was assisted in my quest for more information about Colinswood by Lisa Edwards, the Senior Archives & Local Studies Assistant at the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies. She was able to provide the following:

"The Colinswood maternity home in Farnham Common was originally the Colinswood Hotel. The maternity home opened in October 1942 and was run by Buckinghamshire County council, it had 22 beds. It was one of three maternity homes in the Slough area."

"We have a couple of newspaper cuttings concerning the maternity home including one which stated that the 1,000th baby was due to be born there in May 1946. The other [published March 19, 1954] relates to a new matron [Sister Phyllis Sybil Roorby] being employed [effective April 1, 1954 to replace Matron A.M. Allardyce who resigned]. I have checked the telephone directories and the last time Colinswood Maternity Home is listed is in 1969."

The news clippings Ms. Edwards provided are from the Slough Observer newspaper. If I can get permission from them, or the current owner, I will post a scan of the clippings.

The article about the new matron makes reference to a "Save Collinswood" movement spearheaded by a Leonora Short, as there was consideration at the time in 1954 to closing the facility. I notice that even back then the spelling of Colinswood varied. The newspaper used only one 'l' throughout the story yet Ms. Short's group was named with two. This could simply be sloppy editing work.
