Canada / 2016 census
« on: Tuesday 24 May 16 01:56 BST (UK)  »
Anyone else find it strange that the census forms didn't request any information about birth place, race, or religion?

Thinking about my future generations, it seemed like an incomplete questionnaire.

Thanks for the info Sandra.

I believe I was also able to find doris' death in 1999 also in Montreal.  Hopefully I can find her death cert. or obit.

Thanks again.

It's definitely a good start.

Are all the people you listed deceased  ???

There are no BMD indexes in Canada as in the UK.  Birth, Death, and Marriage Certificates are issued by the province or territory where the event occurred. There are restrictions on who can apply - see here.

Thanks Sandra.  It never occurred to me that some may still be living.  My Aunt is 70 so the siblings are most likely still alive.

Hi All,

I'm looking for my Aunt who is interested in her biological family's history.  Her father was Austin Holt who she knows died in 1975.  I found his grave at Mount Royal Cemetery which lists his death as April 25th 1975.  Can someone please help with locating his death certificate or obit?  Once I find that, I can go from there.

What she believes she knows:

her mother was Doris (Williams or Healey)
May have had siblings James, William, Rosemary.
Possibly also a brother named Leslie, a sister Denise, and possibly another sister born prior to 1946.
There may also be three more brothers.

I think the death certificate or obit will give me a good place to start.  Or even a marriage certificate.

Thank you in advance,

~Keith

That's weird cuz usually, parent's name are on marriage records. I read it and there is absolutely nothing.
Did you contacted any historical society of Edmonton or Fort Edmonton ? Metis Nation National Council ?

There is a lot of place where you can call and ask for information. Maybe someone knows.

MNO don't help individuals with research.  It's up to you to prove it.  There is another Metis organization in Ontario that will do the research of course for a fee.  I'm not sure about them being recognized by the Metis National council.

Yes,

I have copies of his HBC records, putting him in Spokane House that Finlay built and was posted in 1824.

I also have Jossette's baptism the day before her marriage but it also does not have her parent's names, but says she was born in 1800 at forte des prairies.  Jacques Finlay was stationed at Forte des Prairies in 1800.

MNO says it's not enough proof.

I'm sure there were lots of Finlays running around a Fur trading post in 1800.

For this part of my family I may not break through this wall.  Here's a link to a previous thread I had posted.

Thanks for all that.  At one point I did have access to the drouin collection but haven't been as active lately.  I think my road block that I hit with proving that my 4 x ggm was the same Josette Finlay that is the daughter of Jacco Finlay has really discouraged me.  I put in a solid year of work and hit a complete wall.  Josette married into the Pions so I thought maybe there would be some kind of clue.  I've hit road blocks now my Dad's paternal and maternal side and my mom's maternal side.

Thanks for looking.  I knew the names but I didn't have the marriage certificate.

Cool.  Let me know if you see anything on the Pion dit Lafontaine family. Immigrated to Quebec sometime between 1608 and 1634.  Nicolas Pion dit lafontaine married Jeanne Amiot who I believe was a fille du roi.

If you wrote it in French I could read it.  I knew I couldn't speak it anymore when last time I visited, I would ask a question in French and get a response in English.
