Angus (Forfarshire) / John Lindsay born about 1790 in Angus
« on: Sunday 31 August 14 17:40 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone. I'm new to this so please be patient!

I think that my 4xGreat Grandfather was John Lindsay born about 1790 in Angus. He married Jean Anderson (also born about 1790 in Angus from census records). They married on 25 Oct 1808 at Aberlemno, Angus. They had Martha Lindsay, born 28 March 1822 in Brechin and my 3x Great Grandfather Robert Lindsay, born 14 March 1826 in Brechin. John Lindsay was recorded as a Labourer at a Timber Market in 1826 and was listed as a Contractor at Gallowhill, Brechin on the 1841 census.

Robert Lindsay worked initially as a railway porter, eventually becoming a Railway Traffic Agent with the Caledonian Railway. He died at St Vigeans in August 1883. He married Jane Robertson (born Craig, 1825) and they married at Aberlemno on 08 Dec 1848. They had 5 children; Susan Robertson Lindsay (born 1850 Banchory Devenick, Kincardineshire),  Robert Lindsay (born 1852, Old Machar), Alexander Lindsay (born about 1854, Old Machar), James Lindsay (born 1856, Old Machar) and Isabella Jane Lindsay (born 1858, Old Machar).

My 2x Great Grandmother was Susan Lindsay who married William Davidson (born 08 March 1840, Newhills, Aberdeen) at St Vigeans on 01 July 1870.
My Great Grandfather was Robert Lindsay Davidson, their son who was born in Perth on 02 May 1871. He was eldest of 8 children. Robert married Margaret Burns Robertson (born 23 June 1872 in Aberuthven, Perthshire) on 03 Feb 1899 in Perth and their first child, William Davidson (born 10 Dec 1899 in Perth) was my Grandfather.

I would really like to find out more about John Lindsay and see if I can take this line any further back and so would be very grateful for any help or advice please. Of course, anything about the Andersons, Davidsons and Robertsons would also be very much appreciated!

Hello fearliathmor,
I have just come upon this thread by accident when researching the MacGillivrays and realised that this post was from my mother! She had been starting out with her family tree research but soon gave up due to ill health so I don't think she ever saw your replies. Unfortunately my mum passed away two years ago but I have been trying to work on the family tree and would love to find out more about the MacGillivrays. My Great Great Grandfather was Thomas McGillivray (Shepherd) who married Margaret Noble in The Free Church Manse in Daviot in 1859. I believe they had 9 children from census records and my Great Grandmother was their daughter Margaret. She married John Wilson in January 1900. It sounds like Margaret and your Grandmother were sisters? I would love to find out more and hope you see this reply. My mother would have loved to have made contact with you.
Kind regards,
Fortune Daughter
