World War Two / Re: Help Identifying my Grandad's Medals WW2
« on: Wednesday 26 August 15 17:17 BST (UK)  »
Thanks for everyone's input. I had thought about it being a sports medal but wan't sure.

You may have some medals missing. Have you considered getting a copy of his service records?

There's four medals in total: War Medal, Burma Star, 1939-1945 Star and the unknown 'swimming' one. Plus the Pacific Clasp which I believe was worn on the Burma Star in place of the Pacific Star (apparently they couldn't wear both stars due to uniform regulations or something - I need to look more into that).

I'm definitely going to look at getting his service records at some point - just piecing together what I already have at the moment.

World War Two / Help Identifying my Grandad's Medals WW2
« on: Wednesday 26 August 15 10:06 BST (UK)  »
Can any one help with identifying one of my Grandad's medals. I've attached photos of the front and back. Apologies that they are a little blurry, it's the best I've got until I can visit the relative who has them.

The one I am interested in is the one with the dark blue ribbon. I know the other two are the 1939-1945 Star and the War Medal. If it helps, he was in the Royal Marines and served in the Pacific and Burma during WW2. He was on HMS Howe at some point, although I don't have the exact dates.

Hi Garen

Great to hear form someone else who's also trying to figure out this bunch! Looks like you're a lot further ahead than I am.

I clicked through to your website and realised that I have looked at it before but it was before I'd gotten very far so while I thought there might be some connection going some of the surnames on there, I hadn't yet made the links. Now there's some jumping out at me!

I haven't looked at this part of my tree in a while so I'm going to dig out my notes and go through it again. If I come across anything that I think may be of use to you, I'll let you know.

The Common Room / Maiden Names
« on: Sunday 18 January 15 14:47 GMT (UK)  »
I have a female ancestor who's surname was changed at a young age when her mother got married ( I don't believe the husband was her father). I'm having trouble which name to use as the maiden name - the one her birth was registered under or the one she would have used for most of her childhood until she herself got married. It's starting to get a bit annoying using both.  ;D

Any suggestions?

Technical Help / Re: Laptop-Leave the battery in or take out?
« on: Sunday 18 January 15 12:23 GMT (UK)  »
On a related note, it's also best not to switch a laptop off when the battery is fully charged. If you usually run it off the mains just simply unplug it ten minutes or so before you finish using it

Why's that?

Dawn M

It supposedly causes the battery to loose capacity (ie over time the amount of charge it holds will decrease). I don't know the hows and whys but this is what a friend who works in IT advised me so I've always done it.

Thanks for the info. I got a little bit excited for a moment but as far as I can see that Matthew Ward was alive in 1901 ... back to the drawing board.

I've read that biblical names were often used by Non Conformist families.

Pretty sure I've read that to and it matches with my own ancestors. I have a family with the names Elijah, Sarah, Moses and Amos who were Methodists.

The Lighter Side / Re: Why was a given only 1 christian name
« on: Saturday 17 January 15 21:00 GMT (UK)  »
My mum always told me that my brother and I didn't have middle name because she didn't like hers. She more recently told me that the actual reason was that when deciding on names for my brother (who's the oldest) there were disagreements on which grandfather's name to use as the middle one so they went with neither rather than both :D

I always find it strange when siblings don't match with the number of given names. Of my Gran's siblings, she has two names, three of her brothers have one name and one brother has three.
