Hi,

That would be great.  I'd love to find out more about Elizabeth and her children.

There is no provision for identifying parents as deceased on Matthews certificate, so you may be right.  Witnesses to Matthew and Marion's marriage were James McKenzie and Annie McKenzie.

I know that on John Mills and Elizabeth Chapples marriage certificate it identifes Elizabeth as being a widow (deceased husband Charles Chapple) so perhaps there might be a similar classification on Elizabeths marriage certificate to her subsequent husband post John Mills.

The information I have on John Mills is:

Born in London, approx 1820.
Father: John Mills (tailor)
Mother: Sarah Melton (?)

Married Elizabeth Chapple (nee Woods) in 1855. Married in Avenel, Victoria, Australia. His occupation is listed as 'tailor'.
Together they had eight children:
Jane - m- Thomas John Ford in 1875
John
Amelia
Elizabeth
Maria
Elijah
Matthew - m- Marion Hunter McKenzie in 1888

John and Elizabeth must have separated some time between 1867-1869.
John was still alive in 1888 as he is listed on his sons wedding certificate - occupation 'gentleman'

This is all I have managed to find out so far.

Thanks for the quick reply :)

I do have the marriage certificate and it shows John Mills parents names, although his mother's surname is unclear.  I suspect he may have left Victoria as I have not been able to locate a death certificate in Vic.  I shall have to broaden my search. I'm curious about the circumstances surrounding their separation - I've looked for divorce records but not yet found anything in their names.

I'm assuming that the seven children they had together were then brought up with Elizabeth's third husband John Homes, and that they remained in Avenel.  Various descendents of the seven children have truned up still linked to Avenel.  The original John Mills is however quite elusive!

Hi,
I'm trying to find out information about Elizabeth Woods (Sarah Ann Chapple's mother) and her second husband John Mills (born London, approx 1820, occupation recorded as tailor on marriage to Elizabeth Woods in 1855, later recorded as 'gentleman' on son Matthew;s wedding certificate in 1888). It appears he disappeared off the scene not long after their youngest son Matthew (our family link) was born in 1867.  Elizabeth remarried to John Holmes in 1869.  As far as I can tell John Mills was still alive for some years afterwards.

we'd love to know if anyone has any information/links/snippets regarding this John Mills.

Cheers,

JL
