Gloucestershire / Re: CRUMPTON/CROMPTON and KEEPAX in Bristol
« on: Tuesday 11 October 11 11:56 BST (UK)  »
Thanks so much Peter, interesting information.

In the years following my original post, I have made a little progress, which I'll now update if I may, just in case any other nuggets like this appear (she says, hopefully!).

Mary CRUMPTON/CROMPTON married Thomas KEEPAX (b. 1810, Claines, Worcestershire) on 30 April 1835, at St. Peter's, Leeds, West Yorkshire.  No sign of any children for them in that area, and I have absolutely no clue what they were doing there, as Thomas' family has no known connection to the Kippax and variant families which do occur in Yorks/Lancs.  How long they stayed in Leeds, and if they went anywhere else before moving back to Bristol for their son's birth in 1839 is not yet known.

The most likely CRUMPTON family for Mary to belong to seems to me to be that of John Crumpton and Mary (FOOTMAN), who can be found living in the St. Philip & St. Jacob area on various censuses.  The men of the family tend to be ropemakers, the women pipemakers.  But I can find nothing to PROVE Mary's connection to them, just a hunch right now.

Thanks for taking the time to post the information about Mary, it really is much appreciated,
Jenna :-)

Hertfordshire Lookup Requests / Benington PRs

I wonder if SKS might be able to do a look-up for me if they should happen to be at the record office?

The IGI gives various baptism for children of William and Elizabeth ODWELL, between 1773 and 1786.  Also, there are 2 baptism for children of a William & Elizabeth ODULL, in 1781 & 1783.  I'm wondering if there is any possibility that this could be the same family?  I'm not sure if there is any categorical way of determining this, other than maybe a difference in handwriting that could give a clue?  If anyone could take a look at the ODULL entries in 1781 & 1783, I'd be most interested to see if there are any other clues....

My personal interest is in Ann, b. 1781 - I would love to be able to attach some more siblings to her if possible :-)

Many thanks for your time,
Jenna

Berkshire / Re: Dean of Wallingford

I'll get ordering the Berks Burial Index, thanks :-)

The CD from the OFHS arrived today.  As already stated, there are no suitable Dean(e)s in the registers, but, intriguingly, there are a large number of ADEAN(E)s...

Particularly interesting to me is the baptism of one Francis Seaward ADEAN in 1763, s/o Michael & Sarah, at St Mary, W'ford....

Could this be a coincidence or is this my man?  I'm not seeing a marriage or burial for him, which could indictate he left the area, maybe.

If this is the chap I'm after, his parents married in the same parish in 1762 - his mother's maiden name was PITHER.

If anyone has any knowledge of these families, do please give me a shout :-)

Hi Alan,

Probably should have posted here before I ordered the CD, since you're not seeing any likely looking Deans in the right period, but never mind!  It may come in to good use somewhere along the line, as I'm now wondering why he stated the association with the town.

The settlement exam is really detailed, telling how he lived in Wallingford with his parents until he was 14, then was apprenticed in London, later worked in Henley on Thames, then enlisted for 6 years in the Windsor Foresters before moving to Enfield....he sure was mobile... maybe I'll pick up the paper trail somewhere else along the way!

I have other OFHS CDs, which as you say, work perfectly on a Mac.  I think I'll have to think about getting burial information somehow; until I can visit the area, I'll have to unleash the PC we keep for 'if all else fails, open on this'.

Thanks for your help,

Jenna

Berkshire / Dean of Wallingford

After many years of plugging away in the Herts/Middx area, I have just established that it looks like I need to start in Wallingford with my DEAN family...  therefore, I have just ordered the relevant CD from the OFHS.....apologies if I should be posting this to the Oxford section; tbh, every family line I have treads borders of countries AND counties, so it can be confusing when establishing resources.

I was just wondering if there was anyone out there with this surname interest in the vicinity?  I am looking for Francis Dean (male) born, possibly around 1762...  His settlement exam in Hertfordshire is very detailed; he states various work situations as well as the fact that he lived with his parents in Wallingford until he was 14 years of age.

On another note, are the earlier dates for the NBI available anywhere online?  Correct me if I'm wrong, but I have not purchased any version of the NBI because I have been told it is not Mac compatible - if this has changed I'd be happy to know!  I've had good luck elsewhere finding potential villages to research using burial records so I was hoping to do the same in this area...

Many thanks,
Jenna

You're quite right, I could do...

But, as I'll be away from my mail from the early part of next week, I may miss their reply.  Also, I was under the impression that you had to pay for a search?  I think it's £19.  Seems a shame to do that if I'm going to be there in person soon.

If it doesn't pan out as planned, I will contact them though..

Thanks for that Jim - Acock's Green was mentioned in an uncertain way by another family member, so my money's on that one.  I'll bear Witton in mind too though.

If I don't get confirmation from elsewhere, I plan to pop into the Central Library when in Birmingham and see if I can look at the burial registers before I head out there; lots of train trips for us!

Warwickshire / Likely Burial Place, Tyseley?
« on: Tuesday 08 July 08 13:37 BST (UK)  »
Planning on taking a quick trip to Birmingham next week, so I was hoping to find out where my grandmother and probably her parents were buried before we set off.

Unfortunately the one family member who will know seems to be away at the moment, so I can't ask him!

If a person lived in Tyseley, up until their death in 1963, where would they be most likely to be buried?  I know they were married at St John's Sparkhill, but there doesn't seem to be a burial ground there.  I really feel a cemetery is the most likely place, but which one?  I am aware that if you know the correct location, you can have a search done for a burial plot, but I need a bit of help getting to that point!

Any suggestions would be really helpful
Jenna :-)

Oh whoops!  Not a problem though, you caught it really quickly.

I'm going to spend a bit of time this week seeing if I can pin this couple down any further now as I still see them as odds-on favs to be mine.

Thanks again :-)
