Hi Hallmark. I've looked at the summary records on Roots Ireland which don't give the Townland. I can't really afford to view the full entry though.

Monaghan / Clones, Co Monaghan / Co Fermanagh

Looking for help with my great grandfather Francis NIXON and his parents. He was baptised in Clones, Co Fermanagh, in 1855 and parents were listed as Robert NIXON and Catherine MELARKEY on the baptismal record, which also states that he was illegitimate. I have found a marriage record indicating that a Catherine MELARKEY married a James LOVATT in 1858 and I can only think that this is my Catherine. So was Robert NIXON already married? There is certainly a marriage (if not two) of Robert Nixon in 1848 - one in Co Monaghan and one in Co Fermanagh but as Clones seems to straddle both counties, either of these could be my Robert. Was this an adulterous liaison? Did Catherine raise the child by herself or did Robert take the child into his own family? What happened to Robert? So many questions and no easy answers.

Cavan / Re: Nixon's Bradburn's and McPartlan's in Cavan

Thank you so much for all the replies which are very helpful. The lead from aghadowey about the workhouse is particularly useful as I think there's no doubt that this is the Patrick McPartlan who married my great grandmother. I'm still struggling to find the dates of death for both Patrick and Mary but I assume the latter was still alive in 1911 as the Census entry shows Patrick as married rather than widowed. The lead about Abigail's birth was also really interesting and solves the problem I had in not finding her birth. Mary Bradburn was obviously quite a one.

I didn't put every detail down in my earlier post to try and keep it short but in fact I have traced all the sisters and the brother to their various deaths in California (Emily Jane), Canada (Mary and William), Scotland (Charlotte Anne), New Zealand (Hannah Frances) and England (Abigail and Sophia). I'm not sure any of them were Home Children as in the 1911 Census I found entries for Abigail (Bournemouth, England), Charlotte Anne (Glasgow, Scotland), William Henry (servant in Cavan), Mary (servant in Drumcondra), Emily Jane (servant in Dublin), and the two youngest girls in Clifden. Certainly apart from Abigail and Charlotte who I know little about, they all seemed to have had quite sad lives.

Cavan / Nixon's Bradburn's and McPartlan's in Cavan

I'm looking for some help with one of my great grandparents. My great grandfather Francis Nixon (b1855) married my great grandmother Mary Bradburn (b1855) on 30 May 1876 in Cavan. Their fathers' names are recorded as Robert Nixon and John Bradburn but their mothers' names were not shown. Francis and Mary had seven children that I know of: Abigail (b1877), Charlotte Anne (b1883), William Henry (b1890), Mary (b1891), Emily Jane (b1893), Sophia (my grandmother) (b1895), and Hannah Frances (b1899). The gaps between the first three children look very odd but I can't find any records to show that they had children in between. Sadly on 7 April 1900 Francis died and on 4 September 1900 his widow Mary married Patrick McPartlan. Their fathers were recorded as John McPartlan and John Bradburn, while the mothers were Rose McFadden and Eliza Levingston. Then in March 1901 Patrick and Mary had a child Elizabeth. In the 1901 Census, Patrick and Mary McPartlan were living in College Street, Cavan, with Hannah Frances and Elizabeth. Emily Jane and Sophia were living in the Bird's Nest Orphanage in Kingstown, Dublin, and the whereabouts of their other siblings is unknown. However in the 1911 Census, Sophia and Hannah Frances were living in the Glen-Owen Orphanage in Clifden, while Patrick, Mary and Elizabeth McPartlan have disappeared completely. I did find a death of an Elizabeth M'Partlan in June 1911 in Cavan but can't be sure this is "my" Elizabeth. I've tried every research avenue possible online to find out what happened to my great grandmother but keep hitting a brick wall. Can anyone suggest any local resources in Cavan which might help? Also I'm intrigued by the large gap between those first three children. How would I find missing children without knowing their names?

I've been researching our family history for about 10 years now and as you can imagine am well stuck on some of the branches - particularly the Jaffé's from Germany, the Lazarus's and Simon's from Russia, and the Nixon's and Bradburn's from Ireland. Hoping that some of the users of this site will have posted useful bits of info and that I can help out if I have some good leads.
