PS I've just followed the links at the bottom of your replies - what amazing resources. So thank you once again.

Many thanks for that insight - it has made another couple of puzzles fall into place. I think I'll have to do some more research on the 1939 Register.

Thanks Guy
There she was at the top of the next page, but with her original surname scored through and another name in a different hand printed on the top.  She didn't take the new name until she remarried in 1947 - would this mean that the records were changed at a later date or could she already have been living with her new man?

Census and Resource Discussion / 1939 Register 'Page 12'
« on: Saturday 09 April 16 18:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I wonder if anyone could help me please. One of my relations is entered as not living with her husband in the potentially dangerous east end of London, but is with her parents a bit further out in the countryside. My problem is that the entry has been scored through in red ink with an annotation at the side, also in red ink ' See page 12'. Does anyone know what or where Page 12 is or why the entry was scored through. A bit of additional information is that her husband is shown as living with his mum, so I don't know if there was a marital home.

I'd be really grateful if anyone can shed any light on this puzzle.

Many thanks

Hi Lillibet

Yes - that looks like the same one that I have. I was wondering what his father was a dealer in - I thought it was 'left goods' which made me think he was perhaps some sort of pawn broker???

I have found a Hugh Carlon on the 1851 census living with his wife Anne in Canongate Edinburgh as a victualler. On William's death certificate he is shown as living at 5 Steel Street, Glasgow. I haven't yet found him on the 1861 census, but in 1871 he is back in Burnets Close, Canongate, Edinburgh where he is living with his wife 'Catherine', six children between the ages of one and eighteen, plus a servant, and he is shown as a furniture dealer.

Are they one and the same Hugh Carlon? I have no idea until I do some more searching for the 1861 census and/or death of Anne, the wife shown on the 1851 census. I know ages can be misleading, but the 1851 census shows him as 28 and Anne 35 (!) and 47 on the 1871 census.

I feel some more detective work coming on!

But what an intriguing story?

Hi Lilibet,

No, I haven't found his birth record - so no further on I'm afraid.

On his death record it shows his father as Charles Carolan born circa 1800 (a 'dealer in ????? Goods) and his mother as Susan, nee Marley. It was William's brother Hugh who registered William's death and he was shown as living in Glasgow. I think trying to follow up Hugh will be my next task and see if I can track him down.

If I do find out more, I'll let you  know.

Kind regards

Andy

Bingo indeed!  Thank you so much Christine once again.

With the research that you and Alan have done on my behalf I am now positive that the marriage certificate I have of John William and Isabella is the correct certificate but with the wrong details for their father's occupations and John William's father's name. Does that happen often I wonder?  The final pieces of the jigsaw are the details on JW's second marriage certificate (thank you for saving me the certificate fee!) and the witnesses on their first certificate - Isabella's sister and JW's brother-in-law.

Once again I can't thank you both enough for your kindness and all the time you've taken to help me out.  I can now go farther back with confidence ..... until I hit the next brick wall, but again, you've both taught me a lot about researching and thinking laterally.

Andy
